    Hello there

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by MagicPenguin, Jan 17, 2017.

Hey there, folks. I just joined and thought I'd introduce myself here. I recently decided I'd like to take up a new hobby, and, though I've never written anything that wasn't school-related before, I'd like to try my hand at writing creatively to see if it appeals to me. As a longtime gamer and avid fantasy/anime fan, I've always liked delving into made-up worlds and I've also recently started reading more fiction (just finished Wheel of Time). Since I like losing myself in the imaginations of others so much, I thought it might be worth digging into my own to see if there's anything interesting hiding in there. I'm somewhat shy and apprehensive because this is something so new to me, but I'm eager to see where it leads.

    Welcome, mate.

Part of being a writer is absorbing ideas, tinkering with them, and setting them loose.

Glad to see another gamer, other than myself, hanging around here. I mean casual gamer, not the whale-type kind though.

Thanks for the welcomes! I don't really have any specific ideas in mind yet. I was thinking of getting involved in an RP or similar project to spark some ideas. I'm attempting to take note, when I can, of interesting thoughts that occur to me in passing or things that happen or I read about in day to day life that I can use. I have a friend who keeps a dream journal and I thought that would be a good source of inspiration too, so I'm trying to do that as well to see if I can gather some interesting thoughts. Eventually, I'm hoping to turn these stray, unrelated things into a coherent idea for a short story.

I recommend the writing contests. Writing from a prompt can be good practice.
