Yeah, as I recall videos are the same way. If you try to make a simple text link, the software still recognizes what it is and pops the video window in instead. o_O

    Yep, yep, yep.

Okay, is it possible that I'm running TWO Adblocks? I had one turned off for this site, but I'm poking around and possibly I'm also running AdBlock PLUS?

Now I need to see how to turn that off....

Yay! I WAS running two AdBlocks. Didn't know that was a thing!

So I can see the link now.

How hard is it to link that way?

Just paste the url into your post - the site creates it automatically

    Just the regular link?

    ETA: Holy smokes, it WORKS!

It WAS my fault the whole time! Yay!

ETA2: Reposting link to see if it works better the second time around (as the first link is now the generic Amazon one for me...)

    Yep - just like that

be aware that if you do it in the middle of a paragraph of text it will create a big white space with the link in it

What happens if you click that? My link was to the book version of The Princess Bride - does your ad take you to that page?

Hmm, very interesting. I see the book BayView linked on both my accounts (and when viewing as guest).

I see Wrey's on my computer. But not BayView's. I see neither on my cell.

Now it's doing that for ME, too. My own link is now showing up as the orange Amazon image, and it takes me to the Amazon home page. WTF?

And then I went back to the post and did a second ETA with the Princess Bride link, and now the first one is showing as Princess Bride and the second one (the one I just added) is the generic Amazon one.

    WTF x 2?

ETA: Both links look the same when I go into edit mode to check on them...

Oh, wow, I've practically been living on this site the past three years and I didn't even notice that "What's New?" tab was there. It's like possessing the key to a whole new wing of the house.

"Then one rainy afternoon, she passed by a little door she'd paid little attention to before. She turned the handle; the door was unlocked. Poking her head inside, she saw . . . Five hours later . . . "

    @Lea`Brooks, thanks for mentioning it.

I decided to take a look at the Resources tab, too. Didn't get the chance to look at all the subcategories, but I'll throw in my observations about a couple of things.

First, there's a category called "Writing Conventions." I assumed that would be where we could recommend good conventions, conferences, and seminars. But it wasn't--- the only thing in it was a guide to standard manuscript format. Is "conventions" in that sense that well-known a term for our English-as-a-second-language members? (If that's you, be sure to say what you think). And if that's what we mean by "conventions," could we have a place where members can share links to conferences and cons? And what should we call it?

Because that would be a good thing to have on this site.

Second, there was no slot for "Cover Artists" in Resources. With so many of us going indie, names of good, reasonably-priced cover artists are at a premium. It'd be helpful to compare notes.

But now that I mention it, do we currently have a place where it's appropriate to show prospective book covers and get feedback on them? I know people do it under "Self-Publishing," but when the time comes I, for one, will want the opinion of the membership in general, not just of those who visit that particular forum. It'd be great to have a place devoted to that in particular. Maybe a subforum in the Workshop? For cover art and layout design, both.

I think the amazon parser links take a little while to load, so you get the amazon main page link until the parser has loaded the image from the product ID. Thats sloppy, but probably down to amazon rather than anything happening at WF towers

Another one I remembered this afternoon - on my phone, when I go to my alerts and click on a reply, it takes me to the top of the thread rather than to that specific reply. Like if it's "Daniel replied to the thread Your Thoughts On Forum Design'" on the PC it would take me to your post, but on phone it doesn't.

Some fundamentals: Make sure there is adequate font readability. Serif fonts for body text, serif fonts for main headers, font colors thst contrast well with the backgrounds, adequate spacing between characters. Times New Roman is an example of a serif font that, in its default spacing, is very cramped and hard to read, especially for proofreading.

Avoid hover popups like the plague. They save page space, but they are constantly in the way when the user is actively scrolling or trying to edit, which is why most modern style guides abhor them.

"Mobile first" is an excellent design approach. It helps you focus on which elements are most important, and which are secondary functionality. Responsive design goes hand-in-hand with mobile-first, and allows you to have a single code base with conditional layouts, and leads also to a common look and feel between mobile and full screen interfaces.

Whizbang features can be enticing, and may deliver value, but the fundamentals of usability must come first.

Strange, it does work for me. It jumps down to the appropriate post as soon as the page has loaded completely.

Another new member posts their own work for critique on their first day here. (See Plot Development, How do I follow?)

They are obviously not reading the New Member's Guide.

Is it possibly because they look under Members to find it, and it's not there? I know that's the menu item I would choose, if I were new here and looking for a new member's guide.
