All of the publishing mediums and sites?

Discussion in 'Self-Publishing' started by A.P. Kadmus, Jan 22, 2017.

The big 4 I think of are: Create-A-space, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, Smashwords.
What are the other sites you can upload to that are worth it? Ingram? And like I found a small site called Leanpub but I don't think it's necessarily worth the time. Unless someone here has a diff story.

You've kind of got a blur between retailers/devices and the services that give access to retailers, as well as between POD outlets and e-publishing.

I think a list with the following categories would make more sense, but I can't say I've got all the entries in each category, and I'm not positive about the details, so everyone please feel free to edit...

    Retailers/Proprietary Devices:
    Amazon (for Kindle)
    B&N (for Nook)
    Kobo
    iBooks/iTunes
    Google Play

Distributors (these guys will format and place your books in the above retailers as well as others):
    Smashwords
    Pronoun
Ingram Spark? (not sure what they do...)

    Print-on-Demand Services:
    Createspace
    Lightning Source/Ingram Spark

And I think you'll find confusion if you refer to self-publishing companies with the Big Four or Big Five term, as those have traditionally been used to mean other companies in trade publishing. Self-publishing is a legit choice on its own - it doesn't need to immitate terminology from trade publishing!

I used Draft2Digital once - it's like Smashword in that it places your book onto other platforms.

Other platforms like Amazon: Scribd and Page Foundry.

Wait... on a different thread you said you owned a publishing company and were testing the other posters on their knowledge of the publishing industry... and on this thread you're asking questions this basic and mis-spelling Createspace? WTF?

Are you going to pull out the "this was all just a social experiment" line next?

It's the 3rd business I own that I started 3~ years ago and I employ 4 others in it. I can send you the site if you want to email me. I've time now to focus more on it. My employees know these answers in full, but why waste their time when I can get a refresher here or on Yahoo quickly and maintain image with people who matter. My posts on the other thread tho came straight from Brandon Sanderson and very successful authors (1 being a NYT bestselling self-pub author and friend), so I found it interesting how the lvl here differs in reasoning so much from them and their advice. I deleted that post tho cuz I don't have time to go back/forth with anyone online, especially when I see the person has thousands of posts and quotes things line by line and wants the last word. They've obviously too much free time and investment in their ego. I was like that too - when I was a teenager.

After some cursory research I don't think you should actively seek out and point out flaws or shortcomings in the work of someone else.

A tip: In a post where you try to insult someone's writing, you will have a fraction more credibility if you fully type more of your words.

You assume I was talking about writing instead of a lack of business technique. But thanks for the excellent insult and contribution.

Wait... you think you're a self-publisher because you published someone else's book, and she's your best seller but sold only 5K copies a year, but you're somehow able to employ four people based on that income, and publishers only spend $100 on marketting new authors and you know this because Brandon Sanderson says so rather than because you yourself are a publisher...

Come on, buddy. If you're too busy to intelligently engage in a discussion, then surely you're too busy to make up ridiculous stories to try to give yourself imaginary authority.

I didn't say she was my bestseller. I used her as an example of someone who was turned down by big publishing houses who told her she wouldn't sell 10 copies. She never wrote anything before and never studied writing.

"Intelligent" isn't the first word to come to mind in describing passive aggressive insults.

But... if you run a publishing house, she didn't self-publish. And why would you use someone who didn't sell that well as an example in your argument that self-publishers (which she isn't) can sell well (which she didn't)?

Because for all intensive purposes the tools and methods applied were things within a self-publishing person's capacity to do. I started the publishing LLC specifically because of her so most of my research years ago involved "how to self publish?", marketing, illustrating, editing, website design etc. (before getting others for this). An editor specifically said her story was the "worst writing" he ever saw and it would never sell. She's disabled, only has a GED, never wrote before, and was telling a true story about paranormal things occurring to her, so what can you expect? In eBooks + paperback she has since sold approximately 18k copies. The big 5's average first time author sells 10,000 copies. She out-sold a big 5's average first-time author by 55% (10/18) and at a much higher royalty rate. In royalties she sold the equivalent of 65,000 copies by a big 5 publisher. She is NOT a career author (she can't write a fictional novel), so it's a great passive income she wouldn't have otherwise. I don't want to rehash the other thread, but that's why I brought her up and say the process her book went thru was a (well done back then) "self-pubbed" one.

You have four people working for you. I assume they're knowledgeable professionals since they know everything you've asked here and are so busy they can't even be expected to take the time to share basic facts about the industry with their employer. How is this comparable to the resources a self-publisher would have?

If you're arguing that crappy books sometimes sell better than we think they will, I totally agree. But if you're arguing that a book from a small publisher is a good example of successful self-publishing... no. That makes zero sense.

Good job chicken. You pointed out an English eggcorn in writing from a Greek and in a post that had nothing to do with you. I see those 9,000 posts are heavy hitting contributions.
Because at the time that specific book was launched and marketed it was just 1 person essentially self-publishing, and it's a book that would've sold nothing otherwise or if it were up to big TP.

So as a Greek, you can't be expected to write English correctly. But you feel comfortable criticizing others' English-language work.

    Hm.

So asking your employees is a waste of their time, but asking us is not a waste of ours? You're paying those people - they owe you their time. We don't owe you ours. Clearly, you have no respect for us.

Where did I ever criticize someone else's English work or writing?

You've been criticizing here, and needlessly so.

Do you insult people so often that you can't remember what you've said?

Anyway, I just noticed how few posts you have. You're clearly here as a troll; no one who isn't out to troll starts out this irrational and rude from the beginning. I'm done with you.

I don't think you actually criticized, you just made vague threats which you've since edited out, based on... something you found after cursory research... that exposed my flaws...

I don't know. I thought it was stupid so I didn't pay much attention. But let's not pretend it wasn't there.

Ah, I thought since you're known to be published, he was pretending to have seen your writing and pretending to have criticisms of it. He may have been pretending something else. :)

Yeah, there was something about how I'm more vulnerable than he is so I should watch what I'm saying or something... I don't know. I guess we could get a mod to read the pre-edited version, but I think it's just another example of his imagination getting the better of him.

Oh the irony from a guy who comes out of the blue to insult and be passive aggressive. Cya.

Edited? It's still there. And it doesn't refer to your writing or English, and I'll remind you was made after you criticizing a word I said and my topics. As if I have to explain myself to you tho.

Oh. I missed that; I just saw the bit that sounded like a criticism of your writing. Threats, on the other hand, sound like ample grounds for banning.
