Hello all, for as long as i can remember I've wanted to write a book but have never had the guts to do so. Now that has changed! I am finally writing my first book! It's a special ops book that I'm hoping turns into a series. Without giving away the entire story, its about a bunch of men who are the best at what they do, tracking down some really bad guys trying to blow up america with a WMD on american soil. My wife has read it (even though its only 3 chapters in) and says its really good. I am looking for some guidance and some support on this adventure. Thanks in advance!
Welcome. Remember, the most interesting part of any character is their flaws. I think you should post some and get some honest feedback.
There is a section here to post sections of your WIP. There is a precursor (I think), in that you need to review other people's work first. But it is important to let other people see your writing and critique it. It may not be comfortable, because (as you said) you are new to writing, and we all make similar mistakes that need to be corrected. Then again, maybe you're a natural and it's all perfect (probably not because it never is). Either way, it is important to let other people critique your work, and get some honest feedback. It will improve your writing, and that is the aim for all of us.
What drives your story, the characters or the plot? Should we care about the characters and want them to succeed? Or are we invested in the plot and see the characters as a motor to move the story along, but are ultimately a 'throw away cast'? Not much to go on. So figure out if you want to have a kickass plot with bland character stereotypes, or have kickass complex characters that the reader can be invested in to want them to win the day. I know this sounds weird but, try and write the whole thing with more depth than a cheesy action flick.
Thanks! I get what you are both saying. I know what I want fromt the story. It is an action flick, but it a story about a man and he is the reason theres even a story. he is the main purpose for a story and he drives it. the plot is one that is twisted and weaved through out it, but in the end we all want the hero to win and he does. I have a second character that we will fall in love with, but they will end up in the ditch. Itll be a good plot with lots to keep you sitting on the edge of your seat (or at least i hope it turns out that way)
I'd totally know that second character dies. My favorite characters are always the ones who die. As for posting something for critique, the rule is that you need to be a member for at least 14 days, have 20 posts, and for every piece you post for critique you need to have critiqued two other pieces. Not that hard, really. Good luck!
Well I don't want to ruin the book, but die is the wrong term. I want to seriously injury him, but he will live and continue on. Just not like he did at the start of the book
