My SciFi knowledge is kinda subpar, so I got a few questions:

    1. What's MEM? And how do we tag people with that?
    2. Are 25th century drugs like today's?
    3. Does a personal-shield technology that protects against knives exist? Something beyond the vests we have today that can cover the entire body (a-la forcefield)?

Lastly, on which of the docks is the bruiser guy suspected to spend his time? There are four of them out there ;)

There's a glossary on page 24 of this thread.

Jonathan, maybe at the beginning of this thread you could put a list of links to key reference posts like the glossary post.

to the second, i would take a guess and say they are far more potent, pure and toxic due to new tech...but id say the effect is pretty much the same. (jon may have other ideas)

to the third, we dont have energy shields. my character spends his spare time creating one, but the only hint to energy shields is the new fandangled ship with cool new tech.

Ugh Reeves, who are you going with? You're talking to Trin as if you're going with her to The Underground, but Carter's the one leading a team to the brothel.

1)A MEM is a microscopic robot. Think nanotechnology only much larger, maybe the size of a mote of dust or smaller. Once you tag someone with one of Specter's MEMs it will cling to them and transmit on a frequency she can track. She gave you guys tiny guns to shoot them with, they should be soundless and inconspicuous.

2)We're in the twenty fourth century not the twenty fifth, but drugs are much more advanced. With the gentic breakthroughs of the twenty first and twenty second centuries many drugs could be tailor made and suited to individuals, but even generic drugs based on DNA are effective. Right now in 2010 we're experimenting with DNA drugs made of plasmids, antibiotics as we know them may become obsolete by the end of the century

    http://jb.asm.org/cgi/content/abstract/119/3/1072

3)No personal shields. As you said, the closest thing would be some kind of combat armor. This isn't Dune so there are no Holtzmann shield generators, as cool as they are, I don't see anything in science that ligitimizes them. Because Shadow is a techie character and made such a stink about it I allow his char to work on one, but that's it. The Athena is equipped with an experimental energy based defense system called the Aegis, but it's not like the deflector shields of Star Trek. We'll see the Aegis close up later on.

A character like yours that specializes in melee would really benefit from shields, but maybe we can hook him up with a really badass armor if he's not too opposed to it.

Rico is at the West side ports, all the really shady characters like to hang out there

that's an excellent idea, just give me an idea to figure out how that works o_O

Post links look like https://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?p=645855#post645855 To point to a different post, just change the post number (twice) to the post number of the post you want to link to.

To find the post number of a specific post, click on the underlined number near the right of the blue-grey bar at the top of the post. You can get the post number from the address bar of the new browser window that pops up, e.g. https://www.writingforums.org/showpost.php?p=643591&postcount=237

You could just use the showpost link, but I recommend the showthread format, so the reader can look at preceding and following posts.

Cheers for the answers, and I will go through the glossary a little later :)

Regarding the shields, I was just making sure nothing would stop Akinlabi's machete unexpectedly. We'll see about fitting him with protection as we go.

Update: while making updates to my glossary I realized that the post was exceeding forum limits, so the glossary is now split up in two sections, A-M and N-Z. Links for both of the pages on which they appear are at the first page of this thread. Cheers.

    Glossary

    N-Z

Nanite - a robot on a nano-scale, the holy grail of robotics and engineering. Nanites are a hypothetical type of sub-molecular machine that have eluded attempts at construction though would have a number of theoretical applications.

Nanoblade weapons - any kind of bladed weapon with an edge on a submolecular scale, especially on the nanometer scale. Such weapons can pierce or sever any conventional armor material and most of the unconventional ones as well.

Nanotechnology - technology dealing with matter at the nano-scale, engineering dealing with molecules and atoms. Nanotechnology has a variety of applications and uses, especially in medicine and electronics.

NAP - Nanotechnology Armor Piercing. A NAP warhead has a tip with an extremely sharp edge on a nanoscale and can conceivably penetrate any armor type. Like all kinetic ballistic weapons it is limited by range, accuracy, and momentum.

NEDAR - NEutrino Detection And Ranging. A kind of radar that uses Neutrino radiation instead of radio waves. Neutrinos have a number of advantages over conventional radar, as they can travel as fast as radio waves but can also penetrate all conventional materials and are not fooled by RAM (Radar Absorbing Material). Unlike radio waves, Neutrinos do not reflect off of targets the way radio waves do and are difficult to produce. NEDAR is typically used passively to detect Neutrino radiation in nuclear reactors in combat mode and from stellar sources in navigation mode.

Nephilim, the - a renegade aerospace fighter squadron that appears to have sworn their allegiances to a Marauders coven. The Commanding Officer of the Nephilim seems to relish in targeting UEAF ships as if he had a personal vendetta.

NERA - Non-Explosive Reactive Armor, a kind of armor, either vehicle based or worn by a person, that uses some kind of active countermeasure to defeat ballistics. Unlike ERA, NRA uses compressed gasses as an alternative to explosive components and presents no danger to the users or anyone in the vicinity.

Neutrino Telescope - a Neutrino telescope is a type of telescope that uses the exotic Neutrino particle in observation and detection. Such telescopes proved vital in the accurate mapping of galactic interiors, super/novas and super/nova remnants, and formed the basis for Neutrino based detection.

Neutronium - a form of degenerate matter composed entirely or nearly exclusively of Neutrons. Neutronium is remarkably dense and difficult to produce artificially. Neutronium has a number of uses, as a filter element in Neutrino telescopes, as a kind of armor, and as warheads in armor piercing weapons. The difficulties involved in producing Neutronium makes it scarce and expensive.

New-Men Society - the New-Men Society was a radical group of advocates for human genetic engineering and gene splicing experiments. Towards the end of the twenty second century the New-Men society began experimenting on the production of genetic 'super-men'. In the process of experimenting they produced a number of abominations and biological nightmares. Some of their progeny still plague the galaxy.

Peon - is a general term referring to anyone with poor or undesirable working conditions, and especially someone who has little control over them. In the context of Sol a Peon is a particular kind of worker seen in the twenty first century as civilian contractors began to mine the asteroids. Many workers sought to find work as miners, but being unable to afford the costly travel arrangements, were willing to agree to deals in which the travel costs were prepaid (with the understanding that they would pay back their loaners with interest). Many workers found that they could not earn enough to pay off their debts and many died in debt in horrible working conditions, and in some cases, even passing on their debt to their children. Peons were the exploited working class of the belts who helped build many of its infrastructures. As the wealthy people who made their fortunes from the asteroid mining businesses relocated to the Jovian moons many Peons traveled there as well to find work.

Phasic weapons - a phasic weapon is a weapon that uses a modulating field to defeat possible energy based countermeasures. Phasic weapons are experimental, and while something like an abominable snowman of weapons technology, there are rumors of phasic weapons being developed in the military industries of the Galactic Consortium.

Pilgrims - a generic name for any person who leaves their home planet for another. After the end of the second interstellar war many colonists found themselves coming to Earth, many of them only having read about Earth in their textbooks as children. This latest wave of colonist immigrants to Earth are said to be on a pilgrimage, and the term pilgrim is now almost implicitly meant to mean colonists on their way to Earth. Colonists leaving Earth or Sol on their way to extrasolar star systems are typically referred to as pioneers.

Pioneer - a generic term typically applied to anyone leaving Earth for another planet.

Plasmon weapons - a weapon that uses a quanta of plasma, or plasmon to damage a target with heat or pressure.

Polariton weapons - an experimental form of directed energy beam technology designed to project the quasi particles known as polaritons, as a coupled Plasmon (quanta of plasma) and photon (quanta of light). The advantages and applications of such weapons have never been field tested.

PPW - Phased Plasma Weapon. A PPW uses a power source to heat a fuel, typically Lithium Hydride, and magnetically propel the heated charged plasma to its target using superconductive magnetic fields. While PPW's are effective at defeating most kinds of armor they have their drawbacks. The range of the weapon is limited due to heat dissipation, they are prone to overheating, and require both a steady supply of ammunition as well as a good deal of power. Even the smallest and most portable PPW's a cumbersome utility in combat but are a common asset in anti-armor infantry units.

Raider - an aerospace fighter used by Marauders and Slavers. The Raider is a based on an older model of aerospace fighters originally manufactured by the Mercurians. The old frame was based on a reverse engineered Earth fighter that they clandestinely acquired. While improved and upgraded beyond its original design, it is limited to space and low orbit and lacks aerofoil designs to operate in all but the most tenuous atmospheres.

RAP - Rocket-assisted Armor Piercing. A RAP functions as a conventional armor piercing round in most respects except for an added element of some kind designed to extend its range, usually some kind of solid fuel propellant. Depending on the type of munitions used and atmospheric conditions, the range of an armor piercing round can be more than doubled with rocket assistance.

Reflective armor - any kind of armor designed to protect personnel against laser type weapons using the reflective properties of the material. Typically, reflective armor consists of a hard, outer layer of Tellurium Steel with a reflective coating of microscopic quartz crystals. Underneath the reflective shell can be a graphite/graphene mesh. The armor is designed to give decent protection against the low power lasers used by special weapons infantry units but offers little protection against the high power lasers used by vehicles.

Regenerative Armor - typically made for individuals, armor that can repair itself after it has sustained damage. The methods for the self-repair are varied depending on the model of armor, but the most common variants use a large host of MEM's equipped with raw resources. The rate at which the armor can repair itself is typically low, and while regenerative armor tends to be costly, it is a significant asset to small and special units.

Renegades - a renegade is anyone who, while once loyal to Sol, United Earth, and the UEAF, have gone rogue and abandoned their contracts or affiliations. Sometimes Renegades will defect and join another party, but usually they tend to become independent privateers, mercenaries, or join up in ad hoc war parties. The reasons for someone or a unit going renegade are varied, and the parties involved are considered traitorous enemies.

Revenants - a relic of the early years of the gene revolution, revenants first made their appearance as parents turned to genetic engineering to arrange for 'perfect' children. While many children born through tailored gene sequencing seemed superior in most regards to naturally born children, unforeseen problems began to arise after a few generations. Many of these early children either themselves or through successive generations became to exhibit mutations. Mutations would vary from minor aberrations to abominable appearances and abilities. While rare and the methods of gene tailoring have been refined, the recessive traits causing revenants are elusive and many pockets of revenants have been known to exist in hiding throughout the galaxy.

Robots - a robot is a generic term for an automatically guided machine designed to perform tasks, often human-like in form. The first household robots were manufactured in Japan in the 2020's and became common household appliances by the 2030's. In the twenty first century they replaced many professions that required highly skilled or technical training, leading to an economic crisis and backlash against robotics.

Rock Rat - Colloquial term for individual asteroid miners, especially miners with their own ships and means of travel among asteroids.

SAPS - Sabot Armor Piercing Sub munitions. SAPS warheads fire a number of armor piercing rods, typically made of a dense alloy, from a sabot container at supersonic velocities. The zone or area of armor piercing rod deployment depends on range and can be used on either a large armored target at closer range or a group of armored vehicles at farther ranges.

Simulacrum - A simulacrum (plural Simulacra) is an android designed to resemble a human being down to the smallest detail. Indistinguishable from a human without the aid of special devices, simulacra have a wide variety of uses and possibilities, but were banned at the end of the twenty first century due to widespread misuse and corruption. Although all of the ones on Earth were destroyed there are rumors of simulacra still in operation and even still being manufactured throughout the galaxy.

Silicon Planet - a hypothetical planet in which there is an abundance of metals such as silicon and considerably less lighter elements such as oxygen and carbon. Characteristics of a silicon planet would typically be a Silicon Monoxide atmosphere, a surface with crystalline silicon, and a silicate crust. Silicon planets are the abominable snowman of Astrophysics, as the Silicon burning stage of massive (8-11 solar mass) end stage stars lasts only a day before stellar collapse and destruction.

Skinsuit - a kind of form-fitting spacesuit, trendy among aerospace-faring civilians. The lightweight pressure suits are composed of multi-woven composites and combine ruggedness with flexibility. Skinsuits can be surprisingly strong, able to protect a wearer from both micrometeorites and most kinds of conventional ballistics.

Slavers - anyone engaged in the black market of slaving, slavers eke out a living through the acquisition and trading of slaves. Slavers are hunted by all of the systems and colonies, and like the Marauders, because they are usually met with hostility (and can often afford some of the best weapons on the black market) are typically combative on sight.

Slave ship - transports used to transfer slaves, the main ship of the slaver fleets. Slave ships are typically well armed, unlike normal transports, and have a number of other upgrades to elude pursuers. Slavers use the fact that innocent slaves are aboard their ships as a defense, as most pursuers are unwilling to risk killing them as well.

Smuggler - common in the stellar black market, smugglers are independent venders who specialize in circumventing embargos, restrictions, and security checkpoints. They have been known to smuggle weapons, contraband, and even slaves. While engaged in illegal activity, Smugglers are always sought out and in high demand, playing a vital role in the black market economy.

Spacer - the term Spacer traditionally applied to anyone who was born and lived exclusively in space. Spacers were very common in the early days of space colonization. Before permanent settlements were established on some of the planets and Moons, families would live on space stations and give birth to successive generations of Spacers. The term is now extended to anyone who spends significant time on a body other than a planet or moon, especially asteroids. Because Spacers are typically familiar with lesser gravity and space travel they make consummate crew members on starships. The term Flatlander is colloquially used by Spacers for people who live on worlds.

STABAR - STAbilized Ballistic Armor piercing Round. A king of ballistic round that uses a boat tail configuration and gyroscopes to remain stabilized en route to a target. The sensing element in the round, once detecting a target sends a signal to tiny flexors inside the round which guide it to the target. Armor piercing qualities have become incorporated into most ballistics as infantry among the colonies begin to rely more heavily on armor of all types.

Stealth armor - a kind of armor that uses any variety or combination of techniques and technologies to make the wearer difficult to detect either thermally, optically, or otherwise. The earliest stealth armor variants used fiber optics to allow the wearer to imitate their environment while the newer models use advanced holography or energy fields to disguise the wearer.

TAU - Trans-atmospheric aerospace Assault Units. Similar to the paratroopers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, TAU units are tactical formations based on a planet's surface or a space platform travel through low orbit and seize vital and key battlefield areas. A unit of tactical TAU shock troopers can seize aerospace ports, city capitals, or strike the rear lines of an enemy, making them a valuable asset for any commander.

Tellurium - a kind of steel allow manufactured in micro and zero gravity in orbital smith plants. Tellurium Steel is pound for pound stronger and lighter than conventional Steel, because alloys smelted in the absence of gravity melt and solidify uniformly, and the impurities from sedimentation as the molten metals cool are virtually nonexistent. Tellurium is the material of choice for most vessels and structures built in space.

Thicksuits - more along with traditional spacesuit designs, thicksuits have rugged, bulky frames and are typically heavily armored among military variants.

Tunnel Rat - Colloquial term for individual asteroid miners and prospectors confined to a particular quarry for lack of transport. Often very eccentric, territorial, and protective of their mother lodes.

Wormhole generators - A bit of a mislabel, as wormhole generators do not actually make the wormholes. Wormholes occur quite randomly and unpredictably, but with powerful quantum supercomputers the location of new wormhole formations can be accurately predicted like a weather forecast. Massive space stations, (sometimes built and leased by commercial agencies), use powerful negative energy generators to expand the wormhole singularities and make them large enough for a starship to fly through (wormholes are typically sub-atomic in scale). The use of wormholes for interstellar travel, while making fleets dependent on the wormhole generators, saves the starships from the exhaustive tasks of having to produce the astronomical energy requirements involved in maintaining a stable wormhole.

    Star Systems

    Alpha Centauri:

a)Galactic coordinates: bearing 315.7° (galactic longitude) x mark -0.7° (galactic latitude)

    b)Class: G2V/ K1V

    c)Distance: 4.39 light years

    d)Proper name: Rigil Kentaurus

    e)Luminosity: 1.519/0.500

    f)Age: 4.85 × Billion years

g)Banner: The Commonwealth of Alpha Centauri has chosen as their banner a Centaur on a blue background with four stars, three for their system, and a fourth for Sol.

h)System: The Alpha Centauri star system in a binary star system; it has no gas giants but is rich in heavy metals. Because the Centauri system has no gas giants there is a great deal of orbital debris left over from the system’s creation, and asteroid impacts are a frequent and common threat. The Centauri star system is a complex system, with planets orbiting each star and with several major asteroid belts in each.

i)The planets: the planets of the Alpha Centauri system, like the planets of the Sol system, are named after Roman gods and goddesses. The capital world of the Alpha Centauri system is Bona Dea.

    j)Habitable Zone: 1.25 *AUs (Alpha Centauri A) 0.74 AU (Alpha Centauri B)

    *AU=Astronomical Unit: 93 million miles

The Centauri system is the closest star system to Sol. Because of its proximity to Sol it is a major trading ally and it also occupies a special strategic position militarily. An enemy wanting to launch an invasion of Sol would first need to gain a foothold in Alpha Centauri. For this reason the UEAF has several major bases of operation there. It is also the headquarters of the Centaurus fleet. The Centauri Commonwealth maintains fairly good relations with Earth and the colonists are friendly to Earth. Because the system is rich in heavy metals it is also a very important system economically and industrially. The people of Alpha Centaur are hard-working, industrious, innovative, and cultured. They are among the greatest allies of Sol.

    Sirius

a)Galactic coordinates: bearing 227.2° (Galactic longitude) x -8.9° (Galactic latitude)

    b)Class: A1V / DA2

    c)Distance: 8.6 light years

    d)Proper name: Sirius

    e)Luminosity: 25 / 0.026

    f)Age: 300 Million years

g)Banner: the people of Sirius have chosen for their banner a red background with gold flames (an allusion to the name Sirius itself, derived form an ancient Greek word meaning "skorcher"). A triangle represent Sol, Sirius A, and Sirius B. In the foreground is a dog, for Sirius' colloquial name of the "dog star" as well as the Canis Major constellation.

h)System: the Sirius star system consists of two stars, one of them a large and bright class A star, and the other a small and relatively faint white dwarf companion star. The Sirius A system has only one gas giant and several terrestrial type planets, one of them (Isis) being earthlike and suitable for life. Sirius B also has several planets, but because it is a white dwarf system it is not friendly to life.

i)Planets: the planets in the Sirius system are named after the gods and goddesses of Egyptian mythology. The capital world of the Sirian system is Isis.

    j)Habitable Zone: 4.6 AUs

The Sirius system is extremely young and lacks any indigenous life or heavy metals. It is a harsh system where the colonists are subject to high luminosity and radiation. Sirius has adapted to their lack of resources by attracting tourists from throughout the galaxy to see the ocean world of Isis. Sirius is also famed for its penal colonies on Anubis, a cold and harsh Carbon planet circling Sirius B.

Just so that we're all on the same page, this can get confusing:

Major Silas - The Martian spy: round featured face, almost innocent, very average. Ruthless operative, getting sloppy. Master of disguise, hand-to-hand combat, and small arms. He is hard to kill, very skilled in escape, and speaks half a dozen languages.

    Hangs out: Hun Tavern

    ***

Franc Voltan - Former UEAF special ops. Honorably discharged with a number of black decorations. Voltan got tired of active duty and wanted to go mercenary. He turned up in the belt and became a soldier for hire. He's done a number of contracts and has a few guns for hire jobs under his belt. He specializes in long range assassinations. He's a bald man with a rough unshaven face. He had intense brown eyes and a falcon-like beak of a nose.

Hangs out: Heavenly Creatures, android brothel

(so far David is the only one going to look for Franc there)

    ***

Rico Grieger - A local muscle man, used to be a hit man for the Jovian syndicate, ended up in the belt after doing time in a penal colony. Rico has had to hustle daily to get ahead of the competition on the streets and is very urbane and savvy. He is deadly in close rage and prefers to dispatch his targets with a knife or garrote. It's very dangerous to turn your back on him. Rico looks like a football player; wide shoulders, broad backed, barrel chested. His nose was broken at least twice and his arms are covered in prison tattoos.

Hangs out: Lower west side aerospace ports

(so far Wolf and Akinabi are going there to look for Rico)

    ***

Andres Kennedy - Former white collar criminal from South Africa. Andres escaped punishment on Earth by hiding in the belt. He survived by selling his services to anyone for a hefty fee. If it has a circuit in it he can master it. Andres has a niche in surveillance equipment and intelligence, Silas' eyes and ears. If there's something technological in his plans, Andres will be behind it. Andres has blonde hair and a thin face, a deviously thin mustache that almost looked fake, and a thin lipped smile.

Hangs out: The Underworld (not the underground!), fetishistic night club

(so far Trin and Russell ae going there)

Nikhil and Headroller figure out what Arc and JJ are going to do respectively. Pappy and Dogface are roaming the city and trying to avoid getting arrested for curfew violation. Nathan is in jail, along with Mortimer.

Cog's Jescah is nursing a hangover and hopefully feeling sorry about the carnage she caused, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Roric's character Austin is absent, but then again so is Roric...

    END OF REPORT....

Nope. Jesca woke with a hangover, but she picked up signs from her various contacts that Security and others were on alert and trying to hide it. Rather than getting caught up in whatever was going down, she loaded her ship and headed back out into space. She is currently en route to a newly charted cluster of asteroids for which she has a provisional claim logged. It will be a couple more days before she arrives and starts prospecting.

I posted her departure a couple days ago (real time days, not game days).

Jon, you have some errors in your tracking of everyone. Russell isn't going with anyone. JJ is with Trin. Yep, that's about it.

Small clarification regarding Akinlabi, as I've noticed that everyone clings to his cyborg feature:

The sensor eye is not active. While the left side of the man's face has been replaced by cybernetics, Akinlabi shuns that side, intentionally deactivating the cyborg features. As far as he is concerned, he only got one eye.

He still looks somewhat cyborgish though :D

Hahahaha that gave me a good laugh.

And Lebby, I can't give Carter an answer until Nikhil posts. I still have no idea where he's going.

corrections noted, good catches guys; the game is getting complex and details can get confusing at this stage

I dunno where Nikhil is, I'm trying to get where the stage where Pappy and Dog can can Nathan and Mort out of jail somehow.
