thanks for the info... i didn't even know there was such a thing...

btw, cog... i get the red and green, but what is a blue square for?... what does a 365 point count mean?... and how nasty are folks allowed to get in leaving those things?...

The grey boxes are people who don't have sufficient rep-giving power to affect your reputation one way or another - usually new members, but in theory it could be someone with high negative rep of their own.

Of course, we strongly discourage the use of negative rep on this site. If someone takes issue with a post, they are expected to use the Report Post icon

, not direct communication with that member.

The same standards apply to reputation as to all other forum communications. Personal attacks and insulting other members are prohibited, and are subject to infractions or other disciplinary actions.

A point total of 365 is a net positive reputation of that many points. But the number of points conferred by each reputation comment depends on several factors, including the donor's reputation level, total post count, and seniority on the site.

but since there's no way to tell who left the comment and there's no alert button on the cp page, how do we do that?...

You can send a private message to the moderators, describing the message your received and the date issued, and the moderator will investigate and take whatever action is necessary.

Cog was just saying that if someone doesn't like your post, they are expected to report it, so the mods can check it out and decide whether or not the complaint is valid and resolve the matter however they deem appropriate, rather than harassing you via PM or "punishing" you with negative rep.

Beside the comment field, you'll find a link to the thread containing your post. If you click the link, it will take you directly to that post. From there you might guess who it was. . . but that's about it.

Edit: Cog, are you able to find out who left rep?

Yes, we can. And using rep for spiteful purposes, or to insult other members, will be infracted if brought to the attention of the moderator team.

I urge all members to refrain from giving negative rep. They will be held accountable for their actions.

Respect your fellow members! Besides, taking anonymous potshots is cowardly and infantile.

I might as well add my question. I just got positive rep points a little while ago, but under thread it says "N/A" and there is no comment. I'm not even sure if my rep points went up. All I know is that the little icon is green. What exactly does this mean? I have no idea where it came from.

Whoever repped you didn't leave a comment or identify himself/herself. But if the blob next to that line is green, it is positive rep. If it is grey, it could be either, but the person who gave it doesn't have any rep-giving power yet.
