The La Grange Space Stations

In the early twenty first century, before the United Earth, a collaboration of nations made an international effort to establish permanent settlements on the Moon. Using the Moon as a base of operations with adequate resources, several different projects were achieved. The spacecraft that sent the first manned crew to Mars (the Capricorn) was built in space using Lunar resources, as well as a number of space stations that proved vital to early endeavors in the inner solar system.

One of the major undertakings was the construction of the La Grange space stations. At the La Grange point between the Earth and the Sun (L1) commercial companies saw enterprising opportunities in building a number of space hotels, space condos, and the like. The military also saw potential in establishing battle stations at the L2 La Grange point between the Earth/Moon system and Mars, but because of international law there were prohibitions against military installations in space. After the formation of United Earth and the United Earth Armed Forces the first military La Grange space stations was built. One station eventually became the headquarters for the UEAF, L2 Olympus.

The La Grange stations are small cities in space, supporting populations of a quarter of a million people and entire aerospace fleets at a time. In addition to being the headquarters of the UEAF the Olympus is also the official headquarters of the Sol fleet (the solar system's dedicated fleet).

I'm glad you liked the post Mingo.

We're leaving the aerospace port now and essentially blasting off from Earth to a titanic space station. We can just roleplay everything leading up to the LT's ass chewing, the blastoff, the trip to the space station, arriving there, whatever. This should give everyone time to play catch up and me time to develop some more of the universe and scipt our next encounters.

No insane questions.

edit: thanks Headroller! Well yeah, Pappy and the LT are boarding, I just don't wanna force your characters to board too because they're your characters and I don't want to play puppetmaster with them. I would like it if you followed too, let's just say that we're leaving now

To help you guys visualize all this...



as you can see there are a few La Grange points around Earth. The military wants the one closest to Mars as its HQ.



I imagine the space stations as large ferris wheel looking things in space that rotate to simulate gravity. The docking stations would be at the hub, and living quarters, etc at the rings.



The interiors of the space stations are huge, they're like small cities. As self-contained little wordlets, they generate their own air and grow their own produce. Occassionally they may need resources from other worlds, but they are very self-sufficient

Technical point: Only the L4 and L5 points are stable Lagrange (sic) points. The other three are saddle points, and an object at those points will drift away.

Also, the positions of the Lagrange points are fixed relative to the positions of Earth and the Sun. The position of Mars is NOT fixed relative to the Earth or its Lagrange points withe respect to the Sun (there are also weaker Lagrange points with respect to the Earth-Moon system). Therefore, neither the L4 nor the L5 point has any strategic value wit respect to Mars. There MAY be strategic value to Mars' L4 and L5, though, even though they are well outside of the Earth's orbit and a hugely varying distance from Earth.

well, the stations use thrusters to keep from drifting...even a tiny thrust over a long period of time should be suffient to keep several million metric tons of steel in place

and yes, the space station is definetely from 2001, I love that little thing =)

Well, the whole point of putting stations at Lagrange points is so they don't require thrust to maintain position, and that only worls at L4/L5 points. At the other three points, you may consune more fuel due to drift toward the red markers.

You might be better off with stations in elliptical transfer orbits between Earth's orbit and Mars' orbit around the sun.

A station orbiting Sol between the orbits of Earth and Mars would not be effective, it would be easily bypassed by and invading/attacking force. Being within throwing distance of Earth would be a more effective planetary defense, though the station would still need mobility if it would be an effective fighting unit. Edit: scratch that, if the orbiting station was close to earth... it would work.

Back to the story, Jon do you want to describe the cabin of the transport or can we take liberties?
