Dunno. I haven't seen it; my roommate has. He likes it, and he normally hates anything to do with zombies. So I think it's something more serious.

Maybe it could be compared to Twilight, but it's better. It's just funnier and it has two kinds of zombies. The regular human ones, and the weird, scary ones, that can run very fast. It's a classic love story between two teenagers, just that one is zombie and one is human. :D

In my writing I have zombies (sort of). They're only zombies for like 3 chapters until it comes out that they're undead minions of a group of Necromancers. They died and were resurrected as a slave army.

    How's that? Original enough?

Original wasn't the right word. How about, "not commonly used". Is that a fresh enough idea for the publishers?

I'm not a publisher but sounds like half of the fantasy stuff ever written!

Only things I find when googling "Necromancer" is Lord of the Rings, Guild Wars, and Magic the Gathering.

Compared to the normal zombie thing, it's better. It's not as over used and is ~maybe~ fresher.

Sadly, I guess you're right. We'll see. Hopefully the publishers like it when I hit them with it. Everyone who's read it so far likes it and thinks it's better than the classic zombie story.

The reason I call it a fresh take is because it's not like the world is all like the Necromancers. It takes place in present day (2014). The Necromancers invade our world from their own. And there's another group like them (Pyromancers, pretty much) that come to defeat the Necromancers.

I've yet to see anything like that, but I'm sure its out there.

It's actually not a zombie movie at all, despite appearances. It's a satire that makes use of the zombie trope to preach about how all of us all of a sudden have our faces glued to one kind of screen or another, 24/7/365.

Thankfully, despite one of my online reviewers thinking otherwise, my books do not have zombies or any of the other top 10 must-avoids in it :)

Being original and avoiding the memes present and forced out on the media is always a good course.

Having said that, I really was tempted to go for a vampire sci-fi like a really adult book one I read years back (before Twilight) LOL.

I don't know, "edgy" stories can be good if done well and not for the sake of it. I read a great romance novel once about a woman trapped in a cell with a cannibal. Wish I could remember the name.

Man, I guess my story about a zombie mermaid traveling through time on a steam punk styled torpedo who gets pregnant by a being from a parallel universe will never get published.

So my story about a pregnant, time-travelling mermaid gunning for revenge is probably not going to get published...?

#8 is what I tried to define "Manufactured Drama" as. VanderMeer called it "false drama", but it's essentially the same idea.

    Yuck. Barf.

They didn't say that, but more of the single trope by itself with no effort to make it unique. The whole point of this article was to weed out the unoriginal fanfictioners and writers who think they're original when their story still needs plenty of adjusting.

I will say the zombies are way overdone, but there is a movie based off a novel which involved zombies that i found to be very original. The movie was called Dead Bodies but i'm lost for words on the actual book title. All i'm trying to say about that is the fact it did something nobody has really done- a zombie romance story. Sure, it's quite cheesy, but it's a step in the right direction.
