    Different classes of vampire

Discussion in 'Research' started by Man in the Box, Nov 6, 2011.

I've wanted to include different classes of vampire in my works, like how there are more powerful vampires than others, but I admit Google wasn't very helpful at all... There's mention on a few sites of a certain "Vampire Regent" or "Vampire Lord", which would be those more powerful vampires with the ability to summon legions of the undead as well as having increased powers, but that's really all I've found. Besides that, there are the classes found in the "Vampire" series by White Wolf, but I'm unsure if I could borrow some of their terminology without venturing into copyright issues. So, could you offer me some insight into the potential classes of vampire? (it's similar to the Elves thread by the other member) Thanks. ;)

This doesn't have anything to do with actual vampire lore, just stories written by other authors. Because of that, I really think you should invent your own social system for your vampires, which will hopefully also help making them feel new and not like yet another vampire story... However, I think it would be only natural that some vampires, the oldest ones for instance, had more power than the recently turned.

If you take a look at the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton, you might get some ideas.

In the world she created, fledging vampires and even older vampires are controlled by those master vampires who created them. There is a social order/structure as well, such as a master of the city (each city) with rules of conduct between masters, and there is apparently a controlling council as well. The older a vampire is, generally the stronger he/she becomes, but some never seem to have the ummph to become powerful/master vampires. Also, there is some variation in strengths and weaknesses among vampires, such as what creatures they can call and other abilities.

There is also Barbara Hambly's Those Who Hunt the Night, which might give some ideas about vampires and varying levels/ strengths. But in the end, you can create whatever levels, categories, strengths, etc. Use your imagination and what fits your world and storyline.

Well from my experience the types of vampires are this
    Kids in general (spawn)
    My ex (old succubus)
    My boss (the slave driver)
    My girlfriend (new succubus)
Younger siblings ( the ones your forced to live with)
The G-man (he takes your money, then uses it to grow bigger. Making him need more fruits of you labor)
And I plan to avoid the most powerful type called
My kids (leaches that don’t have the mercy to kill you that you are suppose to love)

    Hi,

In the Dresden Files they have houses / orders of vampires, Red and Black and probably a few others.

    Cheers.

You could probably get away with calling your more powerful vamires Elders as it's fairly generic and I don't think you can copyright generic words, I may be wrong though. It depends on your vampires but you could try a more animalistic social hierarchy, an Alpha leads the pack, the Betas are next in line and the Omegas are the lowest of the low. Or you could dig up some old royal terms for it all, a Prince and his Dukes or Barons for example. Or you could have them ranked by age, Newborn, Whelps, Kinder, etc.

I've heard of vampires being ordered by generation.
First generation, the original vampires are extremely old and powerful but each successive generation gets weaker. (Or stronger if you like.)

But spklvr is right. These sorts of things are just stuff people have made up for their own stories. You can make up your own and your reader will accept it.

    P.S. James' examples are excellent.

maybe have blood status like the kid of two vampires is full blooded, the kid of a vampire and a human is half blood and someone turned into a vampire is new blood.

    Or:

say there were ten original vampires, they are the strongest, but as they bite people and then those people bite others they get weaker, so the closer to an original you are the stronger you are or the more powers you have

You may be looking for something along the lines of the anime Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Guilty. I'd say look at those to get an idea, but otherwise do it on your own. Plus... well, having that kind of ranked society of vamps can end up messy.

Admit it, you were just waiting for someone to necro a thread with this or a similar subject matter so you could use that line. :p

Better nip this in the blud, Wrey. Probably shoulda right off the bat, upon reflection. Letting it continue in this vein was a grave error.
