    Is it ok

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Bartleby, Dec 13, 2010.

Is it ok to start your story in first person and then after the opener go into a different view? or should you be one consistent view the entire time?

As long as you find ways of making it not confusing. There are stories which alternate first person points of view - sometimes mix first and third. Although the Hardy Boys I think Undercover series is only one I can think of off the top of my head lol

They gave me the idea for my second book - not sure if I am keeping it but have half from one first person POV, half from another and the final scene is third person.

    Its best not to
though i have seen some good writers that do it beautifully

a general rule is don't and if you do don't do it in the same chapter

so its up to you , but be sure not to do it to much you will confuse people

It's ok to switch up POVs as long as you're able to make both characters deep enough - in an earlier draft of a novel I made the mistake of having like 4 different 3rd-limited POVs and they were all undeveloped (I'm better with plots than characters).

Well I was just going to have the opening scene in first person, then switch to a 3'rd person POV since that is my preferred writing style.

If it's prefer d then do it, the reason most say you should not is becuse it can be kind of hard to not confuse people

Last book I read flipped from one charchter to the other on each chapter, it was the first time that I'd read a book done that way it worked very well.

It can be done. Adds another layer of "be careful" to your job as a writer, but can be and has been done.

    Good luck,

If you're going to change from one PoV to another, I would advise having some kind of purpose for doing so. Don't engage in an endeavor that'll confuse your audience unless you have a really good reason for doing it.
