A dumb question about title options, hurrah!

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Selbbin, Apr 26, 2013.

Ok, I'm looking to enter my current manuscript into a rather well regarded competition. My chances of success are pathetic, yet I still enter due to my self-delusional optimism. My problem is that I'm not sure which of the various title options I should use for entry (not publication, that's another kettle of fish.)

This may be a waste of a thread, but I would like to get instant, initial reactions to titles that I've been playing with. I won't give any details about the story. I don't want that to be an influence. All I'm curious about is which titles seem pretentious, which seem intriguing and, most importantly, which one would you pick to read if only going by the title. This could help stop me from making a horrific mistake!

I like martyr and aberration, but I am a fan of k.i.s.s. The first three seem like anagrams I couldn't solve

Thanks. At first I thought you meant the band KISS and I was like 'WTF?' but then I realised. yes, I too like the KISS principle.

How can one evaluate a title, absent all context? A title can leave you scratching your head, but if you close the book thinking, "Oh! That's what the title means, on a couple different levels," the title is a winner.

I think Martyr and Aberration are the most intriguing. The first two don't mean anything with no context, so they don't make me want to read the story -- they're just neutral. Love Diamond is okay -- I'd probably pick that third. Mercy, Rat and Innocence are ok -- I think Innocence is kind of overused.

I agree with everyone else, Aberration is #1 followed by Martyr.
If I was in the mystery stacks, I might look at the first three.

    Good luck in the contest.

My first reaction to your first 3 titles is this: Eugh get away away away! They sound so horrible, I'm sorry - just made me think yuck. Like it's some horribly cliche/cheesy romance or worse, some random erotica with an especially foul title, like "A Night in Paris" It reminded me of horrible cheesy names like Crystal or Candy or Sugar or something to that effect.

Mercy, Rat and Innocence are all right. No strong reaction.

I had to look up what Aberration meant lol :D This one sounds cool.

My favourite has to be Martyr. There's something classic and brave about the word. I can expect something heroic and a noble, heart-breaking tragedy. It paints a picture. Heroic tragedies are stories that interest me, so I'd definitely pick this one up. It makes me ask questions, the first being: "Who was he and how/why did he die?"

If you can give us a blurb, we can probably give more informed suggestions as far as titling it.

Actually this is incredibly useful as is. It's about what words or group of words are the most interesting/ evocative.

That's exactly the type of story and exactly the reaction I'm looking for. Based on other responses, Martyr is the way to go. And, for the record, it IS currently the title already. Thanks. :) This has been kind of like a line-up.

Go for Martyr, Aberration or Mercy. No one in his right mind would read something with a title like 'Luv Diamond Fox'.

It's actually a bit of an abstract title based on an ex-girlfriend's nickname. Or more accurately, a pretentious wanky title. But it just stuck in my head.

In a nutshell it's about a runaway teen that hates herself trying desperately to find favour with God while maintaining her belief in the best of humanity despite being constantly bombarded with abuse and exploitation. That's a mouthful!

Personally I like Martyr and Aberration. I really like the word aberration in general. :p

I do agree with Cog. I think if the title makes sense by the end of the book then it's good. That's what matters at the end of the day.

It helps if the title gets people to pick up the book in the first place. But as this is for a comp they'll read it anyway. At least the start.
