Need some badass names for fantasy gods

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Lea`Brooks, Feb 2, 2016.

    Hi! :superhello:

So in my fantasy WIP, I have three gods: Life/creation, Death/destruction, and Spirit/illusion. I've been struggling something fierce to find them names. Now, before you go start making suggestions, I've probably already done it. lol I went into a translator and typed in any word slightly related to them, but nothing quite worked. I need these names to be awesome. They're gods after all! And yes, names are very important to me, so saying "pick whatever you want, it doesn't matter" isn't going to help me.

Life/creation needs to be sweet. She's female, nice, typical "Mother Earth" type character. Spirit/illusion is more mysterious. He's quiet, intelligent, and cryptic. Death/destruction is your typical death god: vile, angry, and (obviously) destructive. He's the main bad guy of the series.

A little more info: there are three races, each with magical powers related to one god. Life/creation users are called Vales. Death/destruction users are called Vexes. And spirit/illusion users are called Videns (Latin for seeing).

So what I'm asking... Just some names. lol If you can come up with names that fit the character, I'd really appreciate it. If you have a suggestion on how I could figure out my own, I'd appreciate that too.

    Thanks in advance!

Additionally: Just to throw out some names I already have....

    • (MC) Serenity "Seren" Sandrin, her parents Leda and Cyril, Cyril's sister Celia and her son Ciro
    • King Velos Vidar, his wife Asanna, and their children Avos and Levon
    • Giant griffin-like birds, Femi, Ife, Kwame, Bosede, Jojo, and Deka
    • Cities of Preithos, Ghet, and Dox
    • Countries include Arlynon, Edelmira, Liridon, and Radomir

So if you can't tell, I try to keep things sounding similar. All of the C names, the V names for the races. All of the birds names are African (except maybe Jojo). Even the countries and the King's family names use the same letters. I like cohesion.. lol

    Anyway. Thanks again!

Creation: Verdin (From Verdant: lively + din, made up word meaning powerful being)
Destruction: Madin (From Ma, Japanese suffix for demon + din)
Illusion: Halludin (From Hallucination + din)

Most Gods have been named after contemporary names.

Those are great! I love the meanings too with connection to their powers.

Question of opinion though.. Do you think it'd be too complicated to have the god named Verdin and also have a secondary character named Veridian aka Verda?

Actually I guess it wouldn't be.. People have been named after gods before. I could just use that excuse, right? :p

That sounds like a great excuse :)

Looks like I messed up though; "Ma" is a prefix, not a suffix. I sometimes get those confused.

Either way. :p It's the definition that matters to me, not where it falls.

Thanks again! I think those will work out perfectly.

    I like those too. :)

After plugging those last names suggested into my story, they unfortunately didn't jive right. :( Verdin didn't sound sweet and innocent enough for the character. And I couldn't get over how much Halludin sounded like halogen... Started driving me a little bonkers. lol

So I came up with a couple myself, but haven't decided either way. Viterra for life (vital + terra, or earth). Mordune for death (suffix mor meaning death). And Ariodon for spirit. But none of those feel right either.. :meh:

So this thread is sill open! :p Keep 'em comin!

That's OK, I'm glad you liked them to begin with. To me, Halludin sounded a bit like Aladdin.

Alright, so I have a couple names that may work... I plugged both groups of names into my story, and they both fit pretty well. So I'm struggling to figure out which I should go with. Looking for some opinions on them.

    Group A:
    Life/creation goddess -- Avani (earth)
Death/destruction god -- Luedin (from lues, Latin for disease, plague, and din, made-up word for powerful being)
    Spirit/illusion god -- Eilem (eternal)

    Group B:
    Life/creation -- Anora (honor)
    Death/destruction -- Aeron (carnage, battle)
Spirit/illusion -- Rehor (awake of watchful)

Which group do you like better? :D Also, willing to scrap Eilem... Not really sure if I like it anymore. And Avani can be swapped with Anora, because I think I like it better anyway... Anyway. Opinions?

I prefer group A, the group B names are too similar for my liking.

Just a quick opinion on sound towards the name for the 'evil god':

You could be influenced by Tolkien when picking the name for him. He had the very basic, yet effective idea, that any name with a thick 'r' sound in it sounds evil: Morgoth, Mordor, Saruman, Sauron, Balrog etc.
(The 'r' in Rohan, for example, is a lot softer and doesn't apply to this rule)

Well that's.... kind of the point. :p I like names of related people to be similar, as noted in my original post.

But I'm starting to like Avani/Aeron/Rehor more than Anora/Aeron/Rehor... Avani is just stronger than Anora to me, and the meaning related to her better... I'll give it a shot.

I actually found out after selecting the name that Aeron is also the name of a mythological God of Battle and War.... so... Whoops, but yay?

So I think I decided to go with:

    Avani -- Life
    Aeron -- Death
    Vero or Viro -- Spirit

They sound similar enough to be related, but I don't think they sound so similar (as with Anora/Aeron/Rehor) as to be annoying. Thoughts? :D

For the spirit/illusion god, I would almost definitely go with a 'world normal' name, like Robert is normal. Hey, if I worked with illusions I would totally rock a nom de plume.

    Lux Tulcani - Light God.

    Grik Xelgata - Death God.

God of spirits: Luther or Awara

God of Destruction: Angus or Hadiq

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! But those names don't really fit with my world. And I was more looking for thoughts on the names I suggested a few posts up. :p

    I appreciate the input though!

Okay. Look at the phrase, "All or nothing."
All in Latin is Omnes. Look at "nothing."
use that for the Life god and Death god.

Names aside, you say Life is female and death is male. To balance it out, could spirit be neither or both or simply unknown? Could add to the mystery of him/her/it. But only if it works with your story of course. Just a thought.

Kind of like 'The Seven' in A Game of Thrones, where you have 3 male Gods, 3 female and the 'Stranger'.

Do you like them? If so then use them. It is your book and your world. As names go they seem fine, but it's your story so you have to pick what fits into it :)

I think you should avoid obvious language roots, particularly Latin. Just my thing; but when I do fictional names I prefer them to feel original rather than derived.
    Life/creation- Auni
    Death/destruction- Melinoth
    Spirit/Illusion- Vaneras
Pronounce these suggestions however you want them to be, I find interesting pronounciations also helps it feel different.
