    Hello! :]

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Hailey, May 15, 2009.

Hey everyone. I'm Hailey. I found this website on my own and posting here is going to be a BIG step for me. I love writing, but usually my stories just sit in a notebook or on my computer. I have only shared my writings with maybe 4 people total in my life. I'm not one to show them to the world.

Besides writing I love music and plan to persue a career in it. I am also heavily involved in the Army JROTC program at my school.

Hey Hailey. I'm TheHedgehog, but Hedge will do. :-D What sort of things influence your writing. What do you like to write and read? Any hobbies other than the obvious? I'm glad to see another music-lover, so what types of music do you listen to? I'd love to read your work as soon as you post it. My interrogation aside, welcome to the forum.

Hey Hedge. Thank you for the welcome :D

My thoughts created from my dreams is usually what inspires my writings. I enjoy writing fiction novels, though I do song lyrics every now and then. I like to read fiction and some non-fiction. As for music, I'm pretty wide range. My favorite music is either metal or industrial, but I like techno, country, hard and soft rock, and some pop. What about yourself?

I plan on posting an excerpt as soon as the site will let me.

Hello Hailey, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

As for myself, I'm in to laid-back music ("Backporch" music). Things with accoustic guitar and maybe some piano. Not jazz, though. Stuff that's good for late drives at night or when writing. And then Indie and some Electronic, or a combination of both. Anything that sounds good, really. o_O

Hi there. I too have never shown my work to anyone except family and close friends. I hope to read some of your stuff on here.
