I don't know how many people have read him but Jasper Fforde currently is writing two different series of books that I love. He is incredibly funny with a nice snap in the plot and nothing in sacred. The Nursery Crimes Division Series Book 1: The Big Over Easy The books is about the murder mystery of Humpty Dumpty. The investigation is led by Jack Sprat and Mary Mary set in Swindon. Book 2: The Fourth Bear The missing person case of Goldilocks. The world is one were PDR (Persons of Disputable Reality) live and breath. Humpty Dumpty is in fact a four foot egg with legs and Prometheus is a political refugee. The stories are your standard fare for a crime thriller but the setting and the characters make the book. I highly recommend both books. The Thursday Next Series Book 1: The Eyre Affair Book 2: Lost in a Good Book Book 3: Well of Lost Plots Book 4: Something Rotten Book 5: First Among Sequels Thursday Next is an operative in the Literadetectives division of SO-Swindon where she is handles cases of forged Shakespeare and deals with her cloned dodo Pickwick. Not to mention once she falls into the Fictional World where all the characters of fiction are real things get very interesting. I don't want to give too much away but the series is an adventure through a world similar to ours yet completely different. Not to mention in the third book things really pick up. The second book kind of lags a bit but it is a needed bridge between that end of the first and the starting of the third. Imagine that The Emberverse by SM Stirling Book 1: Dies the Fire Book 2: The Protectors War Book 3: A Meeting at Corvallis I admit it, I am a swordplay nut. The premise of the series is if all of a sudden almost everything stopped working. No electricity, no gunpowder, no combustion engines and it all started happening after a strange wall of lightning. Honestly, I have to limit myself on the series or I start writing a constant stream of fan fiction for it. Rachel Morgan Series By Kim Harrison Book 1: Dead Witch Walking Book 2: Every which way but Dead Book 3: A Fistful of Charms Book 4: A few Demons More My guilty little pleasure. Rachel Morgan is a witch and a bounty hunter who happens to live with a vampire who wants to turn her and a family of pixies in the backyard. There is more to the series but that is as far as I have read. It is another series I have to ingest in small doses. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes magic and horror stories. My only warning is that the first chapter of the first book is a little weird after reading the back of the book, so get through it and then get to all the good stuff.
I've heard about those books and how good they were! Do you read Laurell K. Hamilton? Her Anita Blake vampire hunter novels are her most recognizable and have had great reviews. I'm currently reading her Merry Gentry series about a sidhe (fairies, for anyone not familiar with celtic mythology) princess who is fighting for the throne of the fairie land with her cousin Prince Cel. They're extremely interesting, and one of the ultimate fantasy novels in my opinion. But some more of my favorites are- Naria by C.S. Lewis All Goosebumps books by R.L. Stine A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket Twilight by Stephenie Meyer And I'm on the first book of The Dragon Quartet by Majorie B. Kellogg, great so far!

I'd say Belgariad. I liked Harry Potter as well, but mostly just the first and third book. I of course love all the Discworld novels, and of those, my favourites follow the Nigth Watch. My favourite character is Sam Vimes. When I was a kid I loved the Dragonlance series. Yeah, there are too many to mention.
I really enjoyed Kim Harrisons work. Not only is she a fun read but she is a nice person too. Laurell K. Hamilton I cannot stand to read, but that is for another thread. Another guilty pleasure of mine: The Felix Gomez Series by Mario Acevedo It's another vampire series but even though the titles are eye catching there is little to no sex and well worth the read. The first book in the series is called The Nymphos of Rocky Flats, and the MC is Felix Gomez, a vampire PI who has an aversion to human blood. I can't stand how lately vampire books have turned into thinly veiled smut and little else but his books turn the trend on its ear. True they aren't for younger viewers but it isn't due to a twelve page love scene. Rather murder mysteries and unsolved cases that fuel the adult content. The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny I have only had the pleasure of getting my hands on the first two books of the series and they were hard to find. (I love second hand bookstores) From what I have read of the series I love it. Zelazny writes in a way that makes the words form worlds in front of my eyes without making my imagination kick into overdrive. I like to read for fun and entertainment and The Chronicles of Amber make me feel like a kid that's reading late at night with a flashlight under the blankets.

LOTR by J.R.R. Tolkien (DUH) 4. Rhapsody series by Elizabeth Hayden (love the magic she uses) 5. The Barsoom Project Series by Steven Barnes and Larry Niven (any gamer should read this) I've also really enjoyed the Wayfarer Redemption series by Sara Douglas. More obscure writings of Larry Niven are high among my re-readables, including "Patchwork Girl" "The Magic goes away" and a myriad others. Mostly for the thought provoking issues he deals with.

100 years from now Lord of the Rings might be remembered, but Faulkner and Garcia Marquez will be regarded as the great writers of the 20th century. Hemingway will be forgotten, but Joyce will be well regarded, along with Kafka and Malraux.
Another one that is a good series is The _____ of Adventure novels by Enid Blyton. By favourite was the Island of Adventure.
That's hard. It was Ender's Game but the series just got worse and worse, LOTR is a given, so I guess my favorite would have to be The Dresden Files series.

I'm going to go with a Series of Unfortunate Events. I found the last book to be a little disappointing, but overall the books just brought me so much pleasure and entertainment and left me wanting more that I can hardly complain. I think my favorites of the series have to be book 3, book 6, book 8, and book 12.
