We buried the deer as best we could
in a hole we dug with a few flat rocks
    and a tarpaulin.

We were too stunned or too stoned
    to say anything profound, but
as you got back into the car

you said, this will not be the last time
I meet death, drunk and alone,
under the moon on a country road

    and we laughed, first hysterically,
then anxiously, as the flat rocks
    flecked with blood

    vanished in the rearview mirror.

Really good piece it brought a flood of oklahoma back woods for me. I could smell humid bark and hear the crickets. It smacks like a deer off a windshield while still have a oddly comforting tone. A cozy, high in the backseat on a country road easiness.
