Bug Report [Solved] Painfully Bad Forum Performance

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by LostThePlot, Mar 5, 2017.

So there's a bunch of issues around here for me that I've seen actually before I took a break from these forums almost a year ago. The tech problems were a big factor in why I left, because it simply took too long to want to bother with, especially in fast moving threads. And they're still here now I've come back which makes me wonder if this is a me thing or a server thing.

It's hard to come up with a singular description of the problem but here's the symptoms that I'm seeing:
    • Very very long loading times, especially anything to do with Java (so using quotes, replies and edits) that can take literally minutes then fail to work entirely.
    • Clicking on links to threads (or just refreshing threads) will take me to the site front page instead; often several times in a row.
    • Many actions just failing to complete on the first click of the button (posting particularly) and needing to copy my reply, reload the page (which is no easy things most of the time) paste my old reply in because it wasn't saved on the thread, then reply again.
    • Java errors generating seemingly at random during typing or while trying to do anything.
I don't know why any of this is happening, but it feels like stuff is just timing out; all kinds of stuff all over the place. It feels like that would be the only way that I could click on a thread, try to load the page then end up loading the main site page again.

This isn't a time of day thing or an intermittent thing; this is a constant problem and repeats on other devices I have too. When on other internet connections the problem seems somewhat better but not gone; I still get java errors and it's still near impossible to use quotes especially.

The reason I decided to post after all this time was because yesterday I was trying to post into the sad song thread which should have been fairly easily, even including problems trying to get embedded videos to work. Now embeds are always a bugger everywhere but trying to, fundamentally, just paste four links into the site took me literally hours and plural edits to make them work because the applet for generating code refused to work constantly and in the end I had to find the code as used by another user, copy the format of it and make it work by pounding on it. All because doing anything more complex that just typing into the thread seems doomed to failure right now. And, well, if it's fixable I want it fixed.

So, any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have crappy internet and I haven't noticed any of those issues...

I mean, I don't do much beyond typing into threads, but I can embed videos without a problem, and quotes and replies and edits work fine, too.

    Maybe you need crappier internet!

I haven't experienced any of those issues either, so it could be a problem on your side.

You could try contacting one of the mods directly. I believe @Komposten is the person who deals with this sort of thing very well. He might jump in here once he sees I've tagged him.

I don't have any of the problems you're experiencing either. It does sound like it might either be a problem with your software ...or an internet connectivity thing. Very frustrating. You say you struggle with the same issues on your other devices. Does it happen if you take one of your devices elsewhere, and use somebody else's WiFi connection? Or change/update your browser? Just brainstorming here....

I went into your profile from the back end (forgive the pun) and reset your permissions. I don't pretend to know why this sometimes works, but sometimes it does. Let me know.

Hmmmm. I find it odd that a permissions issue could cause these sort of problems. I can't help but wonder how widespread this issue could be. There shouldn't be any use of Java Applets on our site as far as I'm aware.

Sounds like something I need to look into.

I would assume that he was referring to JavaScript problems -- the forum shouldn't be using any kind of Java.
