    Add Your Prompt / Theme Suggestions

    Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Short Story Contest' started by Tenderiser, Sep 12, 2016.

    You're also welcome to PM me.

    Themes / prompts can include:
    • pictures;
    • words / phrases;
    • scenarios;
    • settings; and
    • ...other things I can't think of.
    I'll say off the bat I'm almost certainly not going to be having genre themes (horror, sci-fi, romance, whatever). So many forum members only write in their particular genres that I think it's too restrictive. But never say never...

    I don't understand. If genres aren't the direction you want to go, what are our prompts supposed to be suggesting? A story? A setting?

    Settings is a good one; I'll add that.

    Prompts / themes should inspire a story but not dictate what the story has to be. So, for example, "Write a science fiction story" is a genre theme, and I won't be doing that. These are some examples (I'm not saying they're particularly good ones; these are just to illustrate) of what might work:

    A picture prompt:

    [IMG]

    Words / phases:

    I never believed in hell. (Thanks to @Daniel for this one)
    "What we think, we become." - Buddha
    Don't cry over spilt milk.

    Scenarios: (also suggested by Daniel in another thread)

    You obtain a device that tells you exactly what choices to make in order to lead the "happiest" life possible. Some of these choices get hard to make.

    A gang where every single gangster is really an undercover cop. Nobody knows about the others. The big heist day is tomorrow.

    Let's not do this for October, but...

    I would like to see members write a story that includes a character who is based on themselves.

    But isn't that a big no no? ;)

    You don't want me as a character in anything though...

    I second this. A Halloween and or day of the dead theme for an October contest is not bad cheesy. It's GOOD cheesy. I strongly, strongly, support Steerpike's idea.

    Oh good, I'm always filling my phone with occasionally cryptic prompts I think of that I almost never write. I can offload a couple.

    Excellent ideas, everyone!

    I've gone with the obvious for October (great minds, @Steerpike) but will be posting a schedule for the next few months soon, so people can pick which ones they want to enter and start writing. :)

    Some of my new stuff..

    Mike, head cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins. When Bob arrived in his new sparkly socks, chemistry erupted between them on and off the pom-poms. Would coach Whopper tolerate such disharmony in the ranks?

    I think settings are a good idea:

    Maybe for November: airports/airplanes

    For a summer month: the beach

    I also think December should be writing about the holidays

    I was going to post a encrypted version of the entire story, after encrypting it using a one-time pad. Thus, I will have set an intellectual test to determine which judges are worthy of appraising my work (i.e. those judges who can break the encryption).

    I am everywhere, and yet nowhere.
    It just so happens I keep a Google Document cataloging random words/phrases and other junk I think of. My time has come!

    Anyways, a few prompts:

    Words/Phrases:

    - Midnight Sun
    - The Keeper of Silence
    - 30 Second to Death
    - "The divine comedy that is the human race."
    - "You can't truly appreciate a man at his best unless you've seen him at his absolute worst."

    Scenarios:

    - You find a small locked box with no key. Something very valuable is inside.
    - You learn that with 100% certainty this life is just a simulation stuck on repeat.
    - Five people get on an elevator. When it makes its next stop, only one person remains, with the other four seemingly disappearing.
