    Italics in Comic Series

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by lostinwebspace, Jan 16, 2015.

    Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if we italicize single issues of comics series of enclose them in quotation marks. Here's an example:

Issue 1 of volume 1 of The New Warriors (sorry to call back to a series that ended in 1996, but it's the one I'm most familiar with; you can see where my loyalties lie :p) is called "From the Ground Up!" Now, would we refer to these issues as such:

The New Warriors volume 1 issue 1 "From the Ground Up!"

    or

The New Warriors volume 1 issue 1 From the Ground Up!

I never gave it a second thought and always enclosed them in quotation marks, but then I started thinking, book series are set in Roman type while each individual book in that series is italicized, for example the Harry Potter series and its first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Do we use the same for comic series?

Thanks for releasing me from this clutch of ignorance! :p

It sounds like they fall into the same category as journals.

You need to use italics for the whole series name and quotation marks for individual books in the series.
