I have noticed that throughout my book there is a lot of laughter. I want to show laughter in more ways than just the tag "he/she chuckled/ laughed" and just saying he/she laughed. What are some different ways to show laughter and light-heartedness?
Be careful of showing laughter. If you are putting up signs saying "THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY" then don't. The reader will decide whether it's funny or not, and is unlikely to appreciate being told they're wrong. If there's another reason for the laughter -- contempt, for instance -- then perhaps you could just show the contempt in their words, and cut down the number of times you need to tell the reader that they laughed.
