    Does this sentence make sense?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by MatrixGravity, Apr 10, 2011.

I wrote this earlier and I was wondering if there were any errors, or if anybody would phrase it differently.

"I absolutely detest the entire concept of transmitting messages via text. I always either receive no response, or a single word answer. People never cease to amaze me."

I think 'detest' is a pretty strong word, so I am not sure the 'absolutely' is really necessary.

The second sentence is incorrect. The rule with either-or is that if you can't remove everything between either and or without disrupting the sentence, then your either-or is incorrrect.

    In your case, you have:

I always either receive no response, or a single word answer.

Removing everything between either and or leaves:

I always a single word answer.

    So this is incorrect.

    Rephrase it to:

I always receive either no response or a single word answer.

If you remove the either...or bit, you are left with:

I always receive a single word answer.

    So this is now correct.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, this makes sense. I like the wording you've used. I think the word detest adds colour and strong emotion to the sentence.

It also annoys me so much when I text someone and they don't text back!

which of the 3 sentences were you asking about?...

    1. detest is ok, if that's how you feel and rest is ok

    2. 'either' does have to be repositioned, as shown above

    3. nothing's wrong with this one
