    Well then,

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by C-zom, Apr 22, 2010.

Decided I'd give my hand on joining some not-too-oversized writing community. Very out of character, but I'm bored with some of my stories only being posted in esoteric forums or circles and getting no feedback. I've been told, for feed back, you guys are quite good.

You should find me primarily, if not only, in the horror subforum of short stories. That's what I love to write--and read. Look forward to reading some of the contributions there and maybe posting one or two of mine.

Hello C-zom, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

I must say these guys are the best I've found so far! Good for you for sticking in the horror genre, personally I could never stomach it!

Reintroducing myself to the writing forum since I'm gonna be an active again.

My name is Glenn! I am an aspiring horror writer and games designer who has made a number of things on and off the paper. I am a massive fan of gothic or traditional horror, from Lovecraft to Machen to modern experts like Ligotti. This has seeped into my love of horror film and shows, and in video games as well. In that latter category I have opened up an indie studio called Dark Craft and make Lovecraftian designed horror games which, to this date, have both achieved 9.2/10 aggregated reviews from large communities respectively. But this post isn't about selling my works off as achievements, I think I try to be more humble than that.

When it comes to writing I tend to write in a cumbrous, verbose style which is creaking but painstakingly fabricated with detail to give the niche readers (or players) more of what they love -- convention and tradition but with modern themes or advancements in the genre. I accept my flaws above my skills, and don't consider myself a very good writer, but what I do well is integrate more direct or mature themes into what I write rather than use idiom and metaphor as a means of translating societal issues or interpersonal beliefs into storyboards. I like to write about detailed and sinister ritual, necromancy, (actual) occult phenomena and cemeteries, sorcerers, doomed esoteric villages or tragic relationships with cosmic horror influence and so on without interjecting any moral facades or pragmatic views on humanity. It makes my writing very raw, and has also limited it almost exclusively to flash fiction. My writing has never surpassed 2 pages in length.

    So why am I here?

I want to get to know more horror writers and increase my friend and connection count in the niche. I want to hone and increase my craft, remove a lot of the traditional weight and cumbrous attitude and refine what I think I do well while shedding what I don't. I also want to teach what little I can to other inspiring traditional horror writers, and bestow the best reviews and advice I can as much as possible in the hopes of receiving the same from the community. So hello again, writingforums!

    Hello and welcome back :)

Good luck with the horror writings. I can't say I'm a fan of the Lovecraftian style of writing but I'll be sure to have a look at your samples all the same

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Glenn!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
