    Romance without the Sex

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by k.imwalle, Oct 16, 2012.

I'm looking for a good romance novel without all of the sex. I enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey, and I am currently reading Bared to You by Sylvia Day, but what I really want is something meant for adult readers that is not so R rated.

However, I did read On Dublin Street by Samantha Young and i LOVED it. It has sex scenes, but so many that it overwhelmed the book with them. So maybe I am looking for something more along those lines.

    Help me out!

I agree, books that are popular because of how graphical their sex scenes are... They're just a bore. I always considered character romance to be just a side plot to the main story, but even if the book's focus is on the relationship between two (or more) people, just writing sex scenes at every opportunity isn't fun. I view Erotica as being akin to the porn industry; except the porn industry doesn't try to pass itself off as "art".

Now as for your wish for good romance books, there are plenty in the category. The Replacement was an interesting one, and... Do you like vampire romance? Twilight and the Vampire Diaries do spring to mind, but heck I'm biased; always had a soft spot for vampire fiction ;)

I completely agree with you! It's really irritating for me, because i only purchase books with plot lines that i love, and it's usually these ones that have all those 'saucy' sex scenes, for some reason. I usually skip them, because i feel it's completely unnecessary. In many cases i feel the writer is just 'jumping on the bandwagon'

My favourite love story without all the sex is Breakfast at Tiffany's, but that's not a very good example of what you may be after.

Sex in a book is like violence. And both sex and violence are often pornographic. i.e.: they serve no fuction but to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction.

Some sex can be part of the mood of the book, as can violence. They can help us get a better idea of the story and the experiences the characters go through. To feel the beauty of intimite relations and touch, or the pain and torment of an open bleeding wound.

Romantic books can easily exist without any sex, as many romantic films do. There are many many great romantic films that do not have a sex scene between the MCs.

But, after all my ranting, I don't have any recommendations. I don't read many romance books.
