    Are compass directions capitalized??

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Tyler Danann, May 25, 2015.

Just editing my book and my word processor / dragon keeps on making north, south, east, west etc capitalized.

As in North, South, East, West etc.

    For fiction is it required?

    Dont think so.

    "He headed south" sounds right.
"He headed South" reads like a place rather than a direction.

Not if they are directional, yes if they are a name.

He went south to the coast.
    He's from the South.

It's similar to how one capitalizes other titles like king or aunt.
    King George
    Aunt Betty
there were many kings in the land
