Australia beginning to resemble the U.S. post-9/11.

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by Christopher Snape., Sep 27, 2014.

In response to terrorist threats, Tony Abbott (our prime minister) has expanded the reach of ASIO, the domestic spy agency. It will have the power "to monitor the entire Australian internet with one warrant", and journalists and whistleblowers will be jailed for 10 years for leaking classified information.

Personally I find this prospect terrifying, especially in light of Abbott's reasoning. Basically he mentioned how we're 'Team Australia' and that 'National Security' was of utmost importance. Of course terrorism is bad, and there have been legitimate threats made against Australians by Islamic militants.

But part of me wonders whether we elected our equivalent of George W Bush last year, and that we're about to start repeating the same mistakes America made over a decade ago.

I understand that not a lot of people here would be in Australia but I wanted to share anyway.

I'm really saddened to hear that. I'm an Australian citizen, but I haven't lived there for 10 years now, so I haven't kept up with the politics much.

I think people might be surprised but many countries (all countries with the capability?) have been collecting and analyzing metadata (aka data mining) right along with the US. It's just that they haven't had their Snowden revelations yet. The UK and Canada have been exposed doing the same monitoring of the net.

CSEC's collection of metadata shows ability to 'track everyone'

US and UK spy agencies 'have access to German telecoms'

Germans Learn Why Friends Spy on Friends

Tap on Merkel Provides Peek at Vast Spy Net

    ... and so on.
