I think from now on, anyone who gets mardy over their criticism in the workshop is officially pulling a Dylan Saccoccio.
They're going to add new circle to hell for purveyors of bad puns, and I expect one day to meet some people there.
Yeah, but I hear that's the fun part of hell. Apparently they have a strip bar with cold beer and demonic dancers that have three boobs like the chick from Total Recall.
Everyone is different and if they don't like it they don't like it. I don't think he should've responded like that, part of the job off being a writer is accepting the criticism. He sounds like it's a job not something he loves to do. I think he really needs to learn how ot show and not tell, the problem when people self-publish I guess and don't know if it's any good. I'd consult a literary expert first myself
Just from the way he's responded I'm willing to bet this is the kind of fantasy where all the women are maidens or prostitutes, the male MC goes into battle in a full suit of armour with sword whilst the warrior-chick gets some mail underwear and a dagger, and elves are the most pretentious f**kwits ever to walk the earth. In other words, everything I've ever hated about the fantasy genre! Oh, Dylan. Good luck destroying your career.
"Do you have empathy? Do you know what it's like to make something for a living? Are you human? Or do you just look at other people like they're automatons that you can slander as though your actions don't manifest consequences?" Bloody hell, that's an overreaction if I've ever seen one. This is absolutely no way to respond to criticism, but to be honest, I feel kind of bad for the guy. Despite how poorly he handled it, and despite what a fool he seems, at top of that comment thread someone mentioned that only 7% of the reviews were one star, yet now it's 84%. It seems like this controversy has gone viral to a certain extent, causing his work to be review bombed.
We're far enough into the digital age, and this sort of thing has happened often enough, that at this point this is no excuse for anyone reacting like this to reviews and the like. You KNOW the backlash is going to come and it is going to be worse than the negative review ever was. Caveat auctor (which is probably butchering Latin).
Unrecognizably. caveat venditor would be seller beware, and caveat lector would be author beware. So I don't know what you're trying to say.
Okay, I left that comment right before going to bed, and directly after reading only two comments from him. Now that I've read the first page of it I can officially say I retract all prior sympathy for this guy. He's such a pompous arsehole that he's invoking Poe's Law, but I think he may actually be genuine. He doesn't seem to think that this is a mere novel written by an author, but rather, some kind of tome of ultimate wisdom written by the messiah (himself), which is why he seems to take such umbrage with this review, because it's apparently impeding the spread of this great wisdom. What's more, this book is apparently a metaphor for this guy's life, and is already self described as his magnum opus. Yikes, no wonder this guy's ego took such a blow. If other reviews and his own comments (including snippets from the book) are anything to go by this is nothing but purple prose and philosophical wanking from cover to cover. I hope this experience brings his inflated ego back down to Earth, rather than giving him an even greater persecution complex.
I don't know Latin, apart from some legal terminology. I Googled the Latin word for author and that's what it gave me. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auctor
*glances back up at the Latin battle the precedes my last post* Yeah, my mention of a Spanish term for feeling embarrassed for someone else is totally unrelated to the last posts. Coincidental.
Interesting! German has "fremdschämen", and Spanish has that. Also, I just found the term "pena ajena" on Google. Me gusta.
Dylan got kicked off goodreads.com the link above always led to an archived page, but if you want to see screen caps of the entire thing, I've edited them in there. And here they are down here so you don't have to go back! http://static.businessinsider.com/image/526fd80aecad04c1228b4572/image.jpg https://behindstgrb.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/dylan_soccoccia_page2_reviewattack.jpg And his response on goodreads https://behindstgrb.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/dylan_soccoccia_blog_1star_whine.jpg https://behindstgrb.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/dylan_soccoccia_page1_phybersreview.jpg
