I didn't see a thread dedicated to comic strips, so ...

SUPER-MEGA-IMPORTANT that anything in this thread be correctly attributed. These are all copywriter items.

It's criminal that this thread is 4 posts in and no-one's yet mentioned The Order Of The Stick.

Lackadaisy Cats is also fun and gorgeous, if fairly sporadic.

I used to be an avid collector of the Beano and Dandy and Sonic the Hedgehog Comic in the UK, must've read about 200 of each haha.

Also I just got a copy of Island, by Image, and was completely blown away. They had me sold when the described it as "like Heavy Metal" but I didn't really expect them to live up to that. Now I have to get another subscription at the comic shop.

Pogo, BC, The Wizard of Id, Calvin and Hobbes, B Kliban, Doonesbury, Bloom County ...and then I left for the UK in 1986, and strip comics here aren't quite the same. (Well, there's always Simon's Cat on YouTube.)

I especially liked @StacyC's choices in her original posts, but I don't recognise the strips themselves.

    ditto for Questionable Content above
Used to read this alot: http://www.qwantz.com

Sometimes they are a bit laboured, but the content is clever more often than not. An example:

Sorry, I should have credited http://www.xkcd.com/ for the first, and the second is Dave Coverly's speedbump.com.

Oh thank god, someone will finally get this. At one point in my manuscript a young wizard starts a spell and screams, "Zot!"

Edited to add: You can find most of those on www.gocomics.com, I have a bookmark folder with about 35 newpaper comics in it, that I read every day. Doonsbury has it's own website. Pogo is over (obviously) but there's an orginization working on making a complete collection. They're only up to the third volume, but you can find them here and here.

And Bloom County is starting up again! Breathed posted a new strip on facebook, and it's looking like he's going to keep it going right where the strip left off (as opposed to after Outland and Opus).

For me, it's Calvin and Hobbes, then Bloom County, then Doonesbury, then Dilbert, then the best of the rest. The world got a little sadder the day Bill Watterson retired.

Ha ha! ZOT! Yes, that will go down well, coming from a Wizard ...if people remember. What are you? Another Terry Pratchett in waiting? Would be great if you are.

Yeah, @EdFromNY let me know about the return of Bloom County. I was so pleased. I so badly miss American comic strips. I remember waiting every Sunday morning for the 'funny papers' to arrive, and loved them even when I was very small. So many great ones.

The Wizard of Id was my all-time favourite. I mean ...Rodney? And The Spook. And The King is a Fink. I also loved BC, and remember one of the strips where an ant falls off a rock or something, quite a distance, and two cavemen are discussing the fall, saying isn't it amazing how ants can fall so far and just walk away? And there's a closeup of the ant, hobbling off, saying "I hope I make it to the cemetery...." I STILL say that, when something happens and I survive ...barely. And nobody ever knows what I'm referencing. Bummer. I'm too old and too far away.

    Classics.

I'll take a look at those links. I need a good laugh. Thanks!

Yes, yes, yes, and yes, although Doonesbury seems to have lost a lot of energy in the past year or so - perhaps because it is now only a weekly.

Always loved the snowmen in C&H. And another old favorite was Gary Larson's The Far Side. I was in my very first accounting job, going through my very first year end closing (and wondering if I would be able to stay sane), when I saw what is still one of my favorite Far Sides - a bull lying on a psychiatrist's couch, the psychiatrist right nearby, complete with notepad, and the bull says, "Maybe it's not me, you know? Maybe it's the rest of the herd that's gone insane." I cut that baby right out and stuck it on my cubicle wall. It followed me to every job I had after that.

A new favorite of mine is Pearls Before Swine.
