An RP based partly on historical Nanboku-Cho Era, or South and North Courts Era, Japan (featuring actual places) and partly on Japanese mythology (featuring demons and certain types of magic). Setting
    Setting
It is Nanboku-Cho era Japan. The year is 1390. In the north, a clan has arisen that claims it belongs on the Chrysanthemum throne as the rulers of Japan. These pretenders are led by prenteder emperor Go-En'Yu and are backed by strong Daimyos. In the south, the young emperor Kameyama is slowly giving in to the strength of the norther provinces. Yet there are a few who would try and fight against the murderous En'Yu. Rumor's have it that En'yu may have gone so far as to hire the local Goda Clan ninja to assassinate Kameyama and stop the brewing war before it starts.

    Samurai Schools
    Samurai Schools:
    Iaido:
Iado is a sword style associated with the smooth, controlled movements of drawing the from its scabbard, striking or cutting an opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword in the scabbard. While new students of iaidô may start learning with a wooden sword depending on the teaching style of a particular instructor, many of those who study iaidô use an unsharpened sword. Advanced practitioners of iaidô use a sharpened metal sword.

Because iaidô teaches the use of actual metal weaponry, it is almost entirely based on the teaching of forms, or kata. Multiple person kata do exist within some forms of iaido, but the iaidôka (practitioners of iaidô) will usually use bokken for such kata practice. Iaidô does not include direct competition or sparring of any kind. Because of this non-competitve aspect, and iaidô's emphasis on precise, controlled, fluid motion, it is sometimes referred to as "moving Zen.” Followers of this school seem to posses the uncanny ability to remain calm in any situation. More often than not, a fight will end with one strike.

    Jodo:
Meaning "the way of the “jo” or jojutsu, is a style using short staffs called jô. The art is similar to Bojutsu, and is strongly focused upon defense against the sword. The Jo is a short staff, usually about 3 to 5 feet long, about the average length of a walking stick. However, the art was not used, as one might fancifully imagine, by travelers to ward off aggressive bandits or swordsmen. The martial art of Jodo was the province of professional warriors. Followers of this school are skilled at fighting multiple sword wielding opponents.

    Kenjutsu:
Kenjutsu is the style that specializes in use of the katana. Though similar to Iaido, Kenjutsu is more focused on actual combat. Followers of this school are expert at wielding the Katana and have even been know to wield two at a time effectively.

    Kyujutsu:
Literally meaning “way of the bow.” Kyujutsu is not limited by age, sex, or physical condition. Almost anyone can take it up and learn if the are dedicated enough. Though anyone can learn, it may take a lifetime to perfect. Followers of this school possess unrivaled skill with the bow.

    Naginatajutsu:
The art of wielding the Naginata, a rod with a long curved blade attached to the end. Followers of this school are skilled at fighting many opponents who may use a variety of weapons, but can be severely limited by enclosed spaces. The follower of this school can also take out horses.

    Kusarigamajutsu:
The art of fighting with the Kama, a pair of small scythe-like objects usually linked by a chain. The follower of this school is almost unrivaled in speed. The chain binding the Kama can be used to disarm an opponent or strike at a greater range.
    Ninja Magic
    Ninja Magic:
Ninja Magic, or Kuji-In, is central to the power of the ninja and is activated via hand signals that allow the Ninja to channel various worldly energies. What makes the ninja so strong, as opposed to the common sorcerer, is that a ninja's power comes from the world around them, as opposed to their own internal strength. The strength of individual jutsu is determined by ones level of harmony with the universe.

    Magic:

    Intonjutsu

    Level 2
Moderate skill has been achieved in the use of Bo Ryaku. A ninja that has reached this degree of mastery is able to convince foes to become his allies.

    Level 3
Above average skill has been reached in the use of Bo Ryaku. A ninja that has reached this degree of mastery has the ability to create minor illusions, granting him the ability to create doppelgangers that will confuse the enemy.

    Level 4
The ninja has nearly mastered Bo Ryaku techniques and can now affect reality to a substantial degree, allowing the ninja to make an enemy feel extreme heat or extreme cold.

    Level 5
The ninja has completely mastered Bo Ryaku and can now read the opponents mind to some degree. This allows the ninja to search out and opponents deepest fears and make them manifest in seemingly physical form.

    Nin Ken Jutsu

    Level 3
The ninja has become adept in the intricacies of Nin Ken Jutsu. With this comes the knowledge to effectively wield any weapon.

    Level 4
The ninja has almost mastered the art of Nin Ken Jutsu. Thrown weapons now become even more deadly in the hands of such a ninja. Having achieved near harmony with nature, the ninja call on the wind itself to cut at the enemy.

    Level 5
The ninja is among the most powerful in the art. Now, the ninja can imbue weapons with the power of the elements wind, fire, water, lighting, and earth.

The light of the setting sun flickered through the leaves and casts and odd light down around Date Bontenmaru as he made his way down the wooded path that lead to the village of Mibu. Ten years. It had been ten years since last he laid eyes on those tiny huts and busy people. He wondered if all his friends would even remember him, if they were still there at all. On his way, he passed a tree that looked to have been cut by sword. He smiled faintly as he thought back.

“Smooth motions Bonten. Smooth!”yelled Master Kinji as Date did his best to wield the katana, ungainly and clumsy in his young hands. “Better. You are doing well Bonten.”

“Thank you master,” said Date, focusing all his energy on the tree he was practicing his swings on.

Date ran his hands over the cuts. So many memories. He could hear the river up ahead and had to stifle a laugh as another memory came back to him.

“Come on Bonten,” yelled Yamahon, a rather plump and rosey faced boy who looked as if his cheeks were stuffed with something. “What are you, afraid?”

Bonten eyed the river fast moving river uneasily and then Yamahon on the other side. All he had to do was jump...but that water was moving really fast. After a moment, Date took a deep breath and puffed up his chest. “I'm not afraid of anything!”

Taking off at a dead run, Date jumped with all the force he could muster. The river cascaded under him as he sailed through the air, the cool wind his only support. Then he came down, just barely, on the very edge of the river.

“W-whoa!” Yelled Date as he spun his arms about wildly, trying to regain his balance. Yamahon reached and arm out and Date desperately took it, but it was not enough. The two went tumbling into the river. They had gotten in so much trouble that night.

Date sighed and continued on past the river. Just up the path, to the right, he saw a small, irregular mound laying in the last patch of sun with only a few large rocks marking the spot. Date furrowed his brow and stopped there for a moment.

Date sat with his chin on his knees and stared silently at the small mound as the last rays of sunset bathed the area in a dim but fiery light. It had been Master Kinji's favorite spot in all the village. He said that the sunset had a way of calming him down, like something was ending. He felt closure when he saw it.

A delicate and comforting hand fell on his shoulder and he looked up a little to see Minnie's warm smile. “Don't take it so hard Bonbon. He was happy.”

Date smiled somberly and returned to gazing at the mound. He was silent for a long time with Minnie standing behind him.

“Minnie...I think I'm leaving,” said Date as if he had only just realized the truth of what he was saying.

“What?! You can't leave Bonbon. Where will you go? What about Yamahon and me? Who is supposed to look after us?” she cried.

Date stood up and turned to face Minnie who seemed on the verge of tears.

“I'm sorry Minnie. You are going to have to learn how to look after yourself.” Date stepped past her and put his hands behind his head. “I've got to go find out where I came from.”

Minnie ran up behind him, “But...won't you ever be back?”

Doing his best to keep his voice still, Date replied. “I don't know.”

Date heard the short halting breaths and sniffling that meant Minnie had begun to cry, “Bonbon...who will look after you?”

A scream shook Date out of his flashback and he looked toward the village. Setting off at a run, Date's heart began beating fast. He smelled something faint on the air...something like...death.

As he neared the place, his heart skipped a beat. Blood was everywhere. Blood and men. Bodies and steel. Date crouched down in the brush, doing his best to suppress tears at the sight of the familiar people now laying in pools of blood. The murderous men that sifted through the bodies were dressed in red and most had their faces covered. One in particular seemed to be issuing all the orders.

"You four, east, you two, north. Mark your territories. You know the drill. Kill anything that moves."

Date began inching away as the searching ninja drew their katanas and began rummaging through the surrounding brush. Unknowing of a rock small rock behind him, Date tripped backwards with a mighty crash. In seconds, he rose and had his Katana in hand. He was ready for whatever came his way.

    "There, southeast!" shouted the leader.

As a few of the ninja dove his way, he charged them. "Die you bastards!" A quick, fluid spin and three fell to the ground. In almost the same motion, Date brought the blade down on the fourth. Without wasting a second, he charged at the one issuing the orders.

The man drew his massive blade, one Date recognized as the work of master Masamune. “More, go!”

Date spun through the ranks of his attackers, expertly slicing and dodging his way to the mass as he came ever closer to the leader. “You bastard! You killed everyone! What the hell did they ever do to you?!” He cried frantically as he sliced at his opponent.

“The lived,” replied the ninja casually as he blocked Date's attacks and returned with his own volley of slashes and stabs. “Who do you think you are?”

Date blocked expertly and launched a fist at the man's face. “I'm Date Bontenmaru, and I should be asking you the same you murderer!”

The ninja laughed as he cunningly flipped backwards to avoid the punch, kicking Date hard in the jaw as he did. “Not good enough Date! You can call me Isamu. I'll be the one to kill you today.” Isamu launched a slash as his chest.

Date attempted to dodge, but just wasn't quick enough. He took the slash across the chest and cried out in pain as the blood began to flow. Enraged, Date charged Isamu, but stopped a few feet short and kicked some dirt up in his face. With his opponent reeling, Date jumped around him and raised his sword to strike, but it was too late.

Isamu, with all the grace of a true master, spun around, dragging the blade across Date's stomach and then up across his right eye. He followed the attack up with a hard punch to the sternum that sent Date back into the tree behind him.

Date's head began to swirl, his vision dimming. Slowly, he slid down the trunk of the tree and into unconsciousness.

Isamu eased his stance and walked closer to the body. He used the tip of his blade to push Date's hair away from his face. You're all mighty...,” he said as he bent down for a closer look. He punched Date hard in the rubs. “...until you fall.”

Isamu stood back away from the body and looked to the surviving ninja. “This was the guy.” He looked back at Date's still form. “An honorable death would be to cut his head off. A pitiful death would be to let him bleed out like a dog. All of you, spread out through the forest and make sure none come to his aid. You two,” he motioned towards two of the younger ninja. “Guard his body. He will be dead by nightfall. Return to master Rikkimaru then and tell him the mission is done.”

As the Isamu and his ninja disappeared into the trees, Date exhaled and stared blearily at the two young ninja the guarded him. He struggled to say something, but darkness overtook him once more.

The birds had stopped chirping, and the trees almost seemed to mourn as the sounds from the village hit her ears. Mineko was frozen in fear, as she just listened. The screams, and the sound of metal against flesh filled her ears. Her hand shook as she held onto her tanto. The soft fabric of the fan brushed her palm as she opened it. Her heart hammered as she looked at the intricate design. She knew she had to go see if she could save anymore, not matter how lacking her weapon appeared.

Minnie ran at a quick pace through the woods, dropping the berries along with it’s basket to the ground. She stopped suddenly, jumping back in surprise as she heard the movement of men in the forest. She quickly grabbed the trunk of the nearest tree, and thrust herself to the nearest branch. She grabbed on with her arms, pulling herself up. She barely got out of sight behind the leafy branches before the man stood below her. She slowed her breathing, and stood as still as she could. The man in red stopped, looking around him. Her hands shook as she started to pull the dagger from her tanto. She quickly released her grip on the dagger, sliding it in as the man walked off.

She jumped down landing with a gentle thud. She grabbed her chest with her hand, and breathed in deeply. She bit her lip as the tears struggled to ooze out, but she concealed them, and began running towards the town once more. She stopped just at the end of the tree-line, and climbed the bigger of the trees, trying to be as silent as possible. She got to the higher branches, and peered out as she looked in shock and despair. The bodies of the town people littered the ground, their blood staining the land.

Her body shook as she suppressed the sobs the tried to escape her lips. All her friends, and people she had come to call family were gone.

No! She thought to herself. No. There is always hope.

She looked around, trying to keep the sadness inside her. Her heart gave a skip, almost sending her falling from the branch she leaned on when she saw the guarded body of her beloved Bonbon. He had come back, just in time to be slain.

Her hands shook as she leaned, straining her eyes to see him, meters away. His chest slowly rose up and down. He was still alive. She slid from the tree with great speed, running silently along the tree-line, closer to him. She looked out, creeping behind some flora from the forest. The guards stood over him, just feet from her. They luckily didn’t notice her as she crept further away. She wanted to get them from behind if possible. She went a few meters down, and ran behind one of the buildings in silent quick steps. Her heart skipped as she heard one of the men say something. She listened intently, as the footsteps of one of the men came her way.

She fled to the furthest side of the building, sliding her body against the side of the wall. She heard his footsteps come closer, as he looked for the source of the noise. She looked around her, and noticed an old cane out next to a half-open door. She grabbed it and held it, ready to attack as she got close to the corner.
The cane came swinging as a blur of red turned the corner. The man yelled out and fell to the ground. She began to thrust the cane at his chest violently, feeling the anger of her peoples deaths flowing through her veins. He stopped moving, as she realized she could hear the other man running her way. She looked out in shock, as the other man turned the corner. She instinctively took off running in the other direction as a sword came down towards her. It missed her by inches, as she quickly turned the corner and ran towards Bonbons damaged body. She looked back, taking the cane in her hands. She held it in a defensive position, though she knew she stood no chance. His sword came down, as she caught it with her cane. The cane instantly split, sending her down on the ground. She grabbed both halves and struck at his legs as his blade swarmed past her head by mere centimeters. He yelled out, stumbling backwards as she got to her feet. She came at him, striking at his hand with as much force as she could muster. She quickly dropped the wood halves, as her hands grabbed for her tanto. She pulled out the dagger, rolling to her side as he recoiled. She winced as the blade barely cut the side of her face. She sliced at his ankles, and kicked him with her feet. She quickly rolled back onto her front, and lifted herself up with a quickness she didn’t know she had.

The man just started to get up when she ran at him, the dagger in front of her. He turned around just as the dagger pierced his shirt. He fell backwards as she struck again at his neck. He landed with a thud, dropping his sword to the ground. She looked at him with angry eyes, kicking his sword away. She jumped onto his chest, and thrust the dagger down with great force onto his neck. The hole in his neck widened, sending the stream of blood thickly down onto the ground. She got off of him, leaving him to die, and knelt down next to her wounded friend.

“I’m here Bonbon.” She said through tears.

Minnie's hands shook as she looked at his deep wounds. She grabbed his hand and patted them gently.

“I’ll take care of you.” She cooed, as she got up placing the dagger back in its place, and sliding the tanto in between the string on her kimono. She ran towards her home with haste. She’d need supplies, water and something to help her move him to a bed.

It was quiet. It was dark.

    The perfect time for death.

Shigeru Otori made his way across the yard, carefully pausing and crouching, moving ever so slowly towards his goal. The large manor was impressive and foreboding at night, but Shigeru felt no emotion now. He was in the killing state, a state of mind when he felt no emotion, and had no thoughts other than the mission in his mind.

He closed his eyes and calmed his soul. He faded away, becoming completely invisible. He crept to the side of the house and pulled out some small knives and began to scale the side of the house. He used shingles as footholes, and when none where available, he used his knives.

Finally, he reached the top of the house and jumped through the open window. His target was asleep, his many chins wobbling with his snores. A beautiful woman lay next to him, her arms around his neck. Carefully, Shigeru removed the woman's arms ever so slightly, and cut the man's neck. He placed the woman's hands back on his neck, and placed the bloody knife in her hand. He then cut her neck, too.

Opening the door slightly, he glided across the hall to the next room where three sleeping children lay, curled up next to each other in the bed. Walking over, he slit all of their necks in three, swift, strokes.

He pushed through the door and continued on through the house, silently killing ever maid, servant, and family member in the manor.

He walked through the front door and stabbed the two guards. He then painted the sign of his masters, the Assassin's Guild, on the door with blood. Now all would know who had done the deed.

He faded away into the darkness.

Mexico, you got a problem with that?
Katsuhaya yawned and stretched to work out the kinks in his muscles. "Another day..." he murmured to himself as he stood, smoothing out the wrinkles of his nagajuban.

Behind the house there was well from which he took out water and washed his face. Katsuhaya sighed contently as he heard the sounds of birds flying over him, calling to each other. Home is were the heart is.

Going back in, he slipped on a dark purple kimono, white cherry blossoms adorning the bottom, the sleeves and part of the right shoulder. He placed a cord around his waist to hold it together before taking the long strip that would become the obi. Yellow this time and without any decorations. Katsuhaya arranged it on the front before turning it around to it's proper place, it wouldn't do to look like some kind of prostitute while he walked to the town.

His hair was tied in a simple ponytail with a string with tassels at the end. Might as well go all out. The kunai and shuriken were carefully placed into his sleeves, the tanto knife was hidden in the complicated knot of his obi and the fan was placed in full view on the front of his obi, as it was norm. Who'd suspect a fan anyway.

The waraji were waiting for him at the front of the house. Katsuhaya sat and calmly ties the string around his ankles, making sure they would be secure but not too tight.

"Yuuki..." An old voice whispered from behind him. He turned and offered a smile to the old lady, despite her age still looked radiant with her silver hair and wisdom-filled wrinkles that didn't detach any from her beautiful features, many of which had been inherited to Katsuhaya himself. In her hands she held a small bundle and she offered it to Katsuhaya.

    "For your trip, Yuuki..."

    "Thank you, Okaa-san."

The old lady handed him a larger pack. Katsuhaya cradled both packages in his arms.

    "Good luck, Yuuki. Be safe."

"Yes, Okaa-san. Thank you." He bowed at her and went on his way.

Despite his intonjutsu he preferred walking when he needed to get somewhere. It was boring otherwise and it detached from the experience of watching the environment. He did, however, keep his eyes and ears open for any disturbances as dictated by his shinobi training. He was, after all, a member of the Koga clan and potential target to any other enemy ninja clan. Then again, simply by looking at him as he was now, no one would really recognize him as Inoue Katsuhaya the Illusion Lotus of the Koga clan, simply a young traveler on his lonely way to the city. Katsuhaya felt blessed and thanked the gods.

"I wonder what mission I'll have next."

The path before he was empty, just the way he liked it. The scene was serene with birds jovially living out their peaceful existence, and the wind gently rustling up a few feathers as they worked. The forests around the path were beautiful and boasted a naturally alurring scent that tickled his senses. He smiled, appreciatively.

As Soujiro Seta wondered through the land he pondered about the ongoing feud in this country. The young emperor Kameyama was slowly giving in to the strength of the norther provinces. Rumor's have it that prenteder emperor Go-En'Yu may have hired the local Goda Clan ninja to assassinate Kameyama and stop a brewing war before it starts.

He found the hunger of Go-En'Yu to be selfish and war mongering and had sworn to protect the land and people of Emperor Kameyama. As one of the few remaining members of the Iga Clan, it was his sworn duty to protect the land at any cost.

As he walked further down the path he saw a village in the distance. He smiled as he saw the people walking around and living their lives carefree, unknowing the tremendous tragedy about to destroy their village.
