Big Name College Football Prospect Comes Out

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by Lewdog, Feb 10, 2014.

This is a big deal. SEC Defensive player of the year and big time NFL prospect Michael Sam said that he is gay. Many think he is a high draft pick talent based on his play on the field, and could now become the first 'openly gay' player in NFL history.

    http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/10429030/michael-sam-missouri-tigers-says-gay

Do you think the NFL is ready for this, and do you think this announcement will affect where he is drafted?

Yes, and any franchise that hesitates to sign him because he's gay doesn't deserve his talents.

Why is this a big deal? Why does it even deserve debate?

Good for him. I think he'll have somewhat of a hard time because the locker room culture is very homophobic (I hope I'm wrong on this). Will it affect when he's drafted? Depends on the GMs of the various teams and what their beliefs are.

Any time there is a first it deserves some recognition. Despite the number of homosexual people that make up the U.S. there is only one other openly gay athlete in all of men's professional sports, Robbie Rodger of the MLS.

...and as I thought, now comes the dose of reality.

"I don't think football is ready for it just yet. In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's man game. To call somebody a [gay slur] is still so commonplace. It'd chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room."

There's also Jason Collins in the NBA.

When he came out he wasn't on an NBA roster and hasn't been signed by a team since he came out.

He became a free agent a few months after he came out, so he was still on a team. I just don't think he played in very many games.

That "nfl assistant" is ignoring the fact that there are already gay players in the NFL. They just haven't come out yet. Some former players have come out after they retired. It's reasonable to assume gay players have played in the NFL ever since the league was founded. It's silly to say "I don't think football is ready for it just yet."

Key here is "openly" gay. Collins didn't come out until after he was a free agent, and was actually previously married.

That's true but none were openly gay. Right now there is a threat of legal action by former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe because he says he was cut by them and taunted by his coaches simply for his support of gay marriages even though he himself isn't gay.

Dude, Collins came out late April while on the Wizards. He became a free agent in July.

Is it too late to jump in with the gratuitous "tight end" "wide receiver" jokes? Gives a new meaning to under center?

I guess you are right that he was on a team but he only played in 6 games as a Wizard after the trade in Feb. I can't find it but I don't think he actually 'played' after he came out.

Well you know Old Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said that he thought Troy Aikman was gay. Aikman originally went to Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA.

Yeah, I remember he only played limited minutes for the Wizards. He might even have played in at least one game after coming out because I vaguely recall the commentators saying something about it, but I might be completely wrong here since I don't follow bad teams. :p

He was with a Stanford woman's basketball player for a long time. I saw an interview done with her and she said she never saw it coming. (No pun intended) Talk about an awkward interview.

I don't know who any of these people are and I don't care who any of these people are.

Don't know who said this either, but he sounds like a moron.

But seriously though, what about the locker room situation? I don't care that he's gay but we need to ask some questions.

Do we still require separate locker rooms for men and women?
    If yes, then why?

Once you answer this question, then you can start to figure out how to deal with the locker room.

Tip o' the hat to Mizzou and Columbia, MO. I went to grad school and law school at Mizzou and I'm glad to see the response in that school and community is overwhelmingly positive.

Why do we separate men and women's locker rooms? Once you answer that question, you can determine what does or does not apply to gay/straight locker rooms.

Well there can be a case for what you are saying, but there are some against it as well.

Many place in Europe are going to unisex bathrooms. You also have to understand that you, I, and many others who have taken showers in a large community showers could have already been naked with a gay man present. It doesn't hurt the way we feel because we didn't know, and because they didn't behave inappropriately.

So the key here is, as long as he doesn't act or say something inappropriate, it shouldn't be a problem. That works in reverse as well, the straight guys in the locker room shouldn't harass him either.

Not entirely. In the case of men and women's locker rooms, there is something different [not] to see. A small distinction, perhaps, but with the wink wink nudge nudge immaturity that still exists in society, a significant difference nevertheless.

Anyway, there are precedents that men and women can co-exist with shared changing/bathing/toilet facilities without acting like sex-crazed morons.
