    Why do you read?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Kylie, Oct 4, 2008.

Moderators- I don't know if this is the right place to post this. If not, please move it. Thanks.

Why do you read? Is there a particular reason?

I read cause it's fun and exciting. Also, I think it's a good way to learn new words and see life from someone else's perspective.

I read for the same reason I watch shows, and play games, to see a story that interests me.

The doorways to thousands of worlds, real and imagined? Portals to the mysteries of the universe?

How could I not step through?

Actually...I don't read...much. I have no idea why I even bother to read...recreational reading that is.

I used to read to escape my childhood.
read Anne of Green Gables to live her life.
    same with little women.

Now I read to escape from the mundane.
Being a mother was wonderful and I loved every minute of it.
But being in the empty nest situation now I am back to
escaping for a few hours when things get really lonely.,

    I often read for enjoyment.

However, I also read to "kill the pain." If I'm ever really depressed or anxious or angry, I'll read just to get me out of my own mind. It may not be the healthiest way of dealing with my problems, but at least I'm not an alcoholic.

    Enjoyment, no other reason.
    Very same reason I write.

I read because I enjoy the written word, far more than I enjoy movies and TV. I like to use my imagination and it is much more enjoyable to imagine what everything looks like than to be shown exactly what it looks like.

Fiction: Because I like to and I have nothing better to do. No friends or social life to take up my time. May as well read about somebody else's friends or social life.

Nonfiction: Because I like to learn about the things I'm interested in and write about myself.

That's surprisingly complicated :p Sometimes, I read just for enjoyment, but I'm starting to read more often to really get into something and examine the world by reading it. I actually like reading to ask questions and have conversations -- and really analyze -- what I'm reading. It's a natural next step for me, which is probably what led me to be an English major.
