    "had came" vs "had come"

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by marcusl, Sep 14, 2010.

I've always thought that the verb following a "had" needs to be in past tense. For example, "I had tried". So, following this logic, I thought it's correct to write "I had came", but recently, I read a book where one of the sentences read, "I had come". I could use some help on this. Thanks people.

I think it goes "I came" and "I had come" but never "I had came".

Cheers for the quick reply. Yes, I think you're right. I don't understand why it's different in the case of "come", though. As mentioned before, normally, it would be, "I had tried", instead of, "I had try". So, why is "come" an exception?

I think this might be one of the things about our language being squishy and people picking what sounds best instead of what's grammatical? I dunno, it's 2:30 am so I am not analysing grammar right now. :p

The past perfect tense is what you are forming. It consists of the word had followed by the past participal form of the verb. Ordinarily, the past participle is the vern stem completed with ed, but the past participle of come is come. The past participle of try is tried, the past participle of be is been, and the past participle of eat is eaten, so we have the following sentences in past perfect tense:

    She had come to visit.
He had tried to find it.
They had been lost for hours.
    We had eaten dinner already.

The verb paint has a regular past participle painted:
John had painted himself into a corner.

    I hope this helps.

'Had come' is in the past perfect tense while 'had came' is in the past participle tense.
You use 'had come' when you are writing in the past already and want to say about something that had happened before.
Example: I was in school while I knew that we would have a teacher that had come from America.
'Had came' example: The pandas had came from China.
Hope that this would help. :)

    Nope. That doesn't help.

"Had came" isn't correct in any context.

Marcusl, the verb after had/have/has needs to be in past participle tense.

'Had came' would be correct if the text is in the present tense.
'Had come' would be correct if the text is in the past tense.

You don't combine "had" with the past simple form "came." It is wrong regardless of tense.

Why you would had come to resurrect a six-year-old thread that had been answered pretty conclusively?

No it doesn't. Had came is never correct for any tense, ever. Period. End of.
