    Linguistic term for "translates as"?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by HorusEye, Mar 16, 2012.

Stream is a synonym for river.
War is an autonym for peace.

Cerveza, bier and øl are all (what?) for beer.

Is there a technical term for what I'm missing here? Something a little more formal than "word in another language that means the same as..."?

    Cheers.

"Translations" is what I would use, though I did a search and found "interlingual rendition" as a potential option.

    Informally we would say:

    Pain is French for bread.
Fanny is not Amercian for front bottom etc etc

Absolutely certain this is of no help whatsoever.:)

A search about suggests that this nifty device is widely used in formal and (linguistic) academic circles too, thought perhaps, still, does not meet your exact needs.

Ok, I'm guessing if there is a technical term it's so unknown it would be counterproductive to use it :) I'll go with translations or a little restructuring of my paragraph. Thanks.
