    hi, i'm a nerd!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by vocalfuel, Jan 18, 2009.

i joined this site to be surrounded by my fantastic writing brethren.

writing is something i've always loved to do. it's my favorite medium through which to express my feelings and the like, with music being my second. i've been writing since i first learned how to hold a pencil properly, though my first stories were scribbles and scratches on construction paper. :p

i've since upgraded from construction paper and now write actual stories and poems with a pen and paper, mainly. or whatever is available when a particularly poignant thought pops into my head. keep your important documents and bare arms hidden if i don't have my notebook with me.

i'm 16 and i live in new york. i'm a high school junior and it's just lovely, really. i love all the drama and homework. i have an interest in spoken word and i've been playing around with that a lot lately. (andrea gibson is truly the master.) i also like biking and the outdoors in general. i play guitar and alto sax (marching/concert band hollaaaaaaa!).

and i'll give a list of my favorite bands copied from my facebook page just for the heck of it:

guster, tegan and sara (any other tns fans here?), alice in chains, nirvana, the cranberries, pixies, yeah yeah yeahs, deerhunter, the weakerthans, rhcp, city and colour, sublime, girl in a coma, tender forever, missy higgins, radiohead, primus, tool, vampire weekend, rivermaya, neutral milk hotel, queens of the stone age, soundgarden, björk, the mars volta, keane, atlas sound, blind melon, audioslave, metallica, pearl jam, muse, enya, sleater-kinney, modest mouse, deftones, megadeth, the arcade fire, death cab for cutie, creed, hale, rivermaya, incubus, stars, the offspring, pavement, staind.

    yay!

Welcome to the forums! Very nice list of bands, I actually listen to a lot of them. Do you like Coheed & Cambria at all?

Hello Vocal Fuel, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I have to say that your font choice and avoidance of capital letters makes your posts difficult on the eyes.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
