Announcement Changes to the Flash Fiction Contest Rules

Discussion in 'Bi-Weekly Flash Fiction Contest Archives' started by Lewdog, Apr 7, 2014.

After talking to some of the other people on the board, I've realized that there might need to be a few changes to help gain more participants in the Flash Fiction Contest.

The word count is going to be lowered from 450-750 words to 150-450 words. All you wordsmiths out there have your work cut out for you! Time to pack a punch, as they say, "Great things come in small packages."

Also an important thing I didn't already have the rules is that entrants should not vote on their own pieces.

I'm always willing to listen to any ideas people might have to make the Flash Fiction Contest successful. Please just send me a message at anytime and I will get back with you as soon as possible! I hope to start to see more entries and votes roll in this coming contest. Thanks!

I like the decision to shorten the word count. It is a fun challenge to tell an entire story in so few words.

I'd suggest creating a voting poll to see what would be a popular wordcount limit to encourage more participation. You'd go directly to the potential writers that way. But, if the change's already been implemented... *shrugs*

Good decision. I like the lowered word count, it's going to be more challenging.

Since I tried the other way for a couple of contests, I'm going to try this new lower word count a couple times so people can see the difference before asking what people think. I hope you join and give it a shot the new way!

The better answer would have been, "I have a pole you can take."

    Shorter? Oh man.
I'd say I'm up for a challenge but I've been here two years and the prompts have actually inspired 4 or 5 stories of mine. But none I managed to complete in time. With the exception of two. Oh and a poem. I tried to get my Naked Dinner entry done but to no avail. Which I'm glad - I didn't take the prompt so literally  People would've been going what the hell? I spun off on a Naked Lunch - weirdo apocalyptic thing with talking cockroaches. Lol.

Flash fiction limits often are tight. Even 100 word limits aren't unheard of.

I suppose it makes sense. 750 is too long for a flash, too short for fiction.

I'm curious, does anyone have a problem with me entering as long as I don't vote? I entered in the first one because no one was sending me anything and I wanted to pop the cherry in hopes more entries would come in. If anyone has a problem with me entering I won't though.

No problem. Because it is anonymous there isn't any reason not to enter. It's not like there are entry fees or prizes or anything else that can cause a problem with 'insider' influence. Also, you probably need to vote, just not for yourself.

Just for the record, I voted for your story simply because of it's merit

Not a problem at all. I would have voted your story even if the contest wasn't anonymous.

Wow. That's really not cool. If you don't like my suggestion fine, but you don't have to say something like that, especially if it's not even directed at you.

I don't think he meant it as a jab at you, he just has an odd sense of humor sometimes, unlike mine which is pretty simple and 1920's Laurel and Hardy-ish. :p

Yeah, don't take my sophomoric sense of humor seriously. I wasn't directing it at anybody
