    Character Name Meaning?

    Discussion in 'Character Development' started by forgotenmemory, Apr 20, 2008.

    Do any of you have names that have a meaning? A cool one. ^^

    Just like my main character will be called Alex, short for Alexander, which means "defender of men"

    Almost all of my character's names have some kind of meaning to it. For example, in my newest novel, the three brothers' names all have some kind of meaning to them.

    Derek Fischer- 'Derek' is the name of a responsible oldest child in my town, and 'Fischer' is just a random last name.

    Luke Fischer- 'Luke' gives off a badass vibe (at least in my opinion)

    AJ (Aiden-Joss) Fischer- AJ's first and last names mean 'little flame' and 'little' because he is the youngest brother.

    Do any of your characters have names that say something about their personality?

    Well, theres this character named Jay, he comes off as being sad and shy, so the main character nicknames him Blue, because of his name, Jay, and because he seems sad.

    Almost al of my characters names have meaning

    Ally - short for Alexandria - Xandria = wiccan name for protector of people

    Noah - because the other characters 'flock' to him; he is central to all of the other characters

    Dyan - wiccan goddess

    Tristan - mythical hero

    I love researching names for my characters. Sometimes helps when creating their personalities

    My favorite site for searching baby name meanings is Think Baby Names, where you can type a meaning in the search box, specify boy or girl and that you want to search meaning and get your result. It has one of the most comprehensive meaning searches on the net.

    Hope this helps.

    My main characters in Immortal's Edge have elemental themed names:

    Anan = Cloud
    Azar = Fire
    Terra = Earth
    Maya = Water
    Eva = Life
    Barack = Lightning

    The names are condusive to their personalities and roles in the story as well.

    In The Book of the Moon Ulrich's name is crucial to the plot as Ulrich is german for "Wolf Leader"

    When I wrote "The Siren", I knew I wanted to use the name Loralei. I didn't know what it meant before I researched it. I found out that a Lorelei is a siren who lured men to their deaths on the Rhine River. This actually shaped my story. The plot came from the meaning of the name. (My story is in the Crime/Thriller section if anyone is interested.)

    I like to use Drake which means dragon, and Chad which is a celtic name meaning great warrior.

    For this 'gathering of words' that I'm working on right now has a charactered named Emory. Emory means leader and strong but the character is actually weak.

    I just thought that was ironic.

    I chose to use Ariel for my main female character, which means Lion of God. Throught the text she is referred to as the Lion of Kepha

    Something that I have found to be truly exciting is when I'm creating a new world and new language and I have to come up with a meaning for the name. Like in Rislenta, Sylatria means celestial. Once you get the hang of it, new languages are so much fun.

    I don't know why but i like sticking to Old names that have a history, wheather people know the meaning or not (Which i sometimes exsplain in the story) It just makes the story a bit more realistic to me.

    If you think it was weird that Chad meant warrior. Chadwick, which you might think is a longer version of Chad means Farmer and it's a lot newer than Chad is. Chadwick is an old english name compared to the really old Celtic name Chad.

    "Ryujin" is the name of the Japanese god of the sea. I chose this for my character (Ryujin Ryanju) in my story, as he is destined to one day return to the sea and rule the underwater kingdom.

    I bought this mega huge baby name book off of Amazon. It is great for this sort of thing. I use it constantly as a reference when I am writing.

    I don't bother with picking names for a specific reason, I jsut pick ones that I like. If I am writing in a different time period I try to make the names more dated, or if I am writing something based in another country I try and pick names that are common there, but I do not look for meanings or anything.
