I don't like the way our system works some times. The fact that a criminal can get off because evidence was found after trial, and double jeopardy is attached. My old partner in Homicide told me that after so many years the bodies would just be bodies, victims would be victims, and I would be able to work a case without getting attached. That hasn't happened yet, and I don't think it will. After all these years, I'm still getting grilled for what my captain calls "going too far". Apparently, it's only my job to get justice for the victim, and that means doing whatever is in my power as a detective. Although that's part of it, I don't think it should be considered wrong to sit at a victims house because she heard something outside the window at three a.m. Nor do I think middle-of-the-night house calls to check under a woman's six-year-old son's bed for monsters is wrong (Johnathan didn't want his mommy to be eaten, and only the Police Woman could get the monster. You bet your ass I got that monster). I may get "too attached" sometimes, but cops are supposed to be the citizens protectors, and putting away the bad guys isn't the only way we can protect. About eight months after I got my gold badge, I started taking classes at a community college for psychology. I can't even count how many classes I missed because of work, but it did help with profiling the perps, for lack of a better term.
