    Chicken liver?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by SonnehLee, May 21, 2009.

Yesterday, I was talking to some people about liver cavier (sp?) and I mentioned that I wouldn't eat liver because of what the liver does (filter the blood), that led to the question:

What would happen if we ate the liver of a chicken that was hungover when it died?

Why not give them a shot? I can't imagine lilly livers are any more appetizing.

    I made a punney!:D:D:D

Well...I don't eat any part of any animal...so I certainly wouldn't eat chicken liver...and are you sure it is caviar...that is fish eggs. Do you mean pate (however it is spelled)?

    Hung over what? ;)

Even if the chicken died of alcohol poisoning, the amount of alcohol (metabolized to formaldehyde) would be pretty miniscule.

Nevertheless, I personally don't care for liver (chicken or otherwise). My girlfriend once served it to me when I was in trouble with her, trying to get back on her good side. She and her girls like it, but she knows how much I don't. I managed to swallow a full helping of fried chicken livers and a serving of pan fried beef liver, with a smile, but I knew my face was ghost pale. She accepted my pennance.

We used chicken liver for fishing catfish when I was a lad.
I don't eat the stuff, but I do enjoy chicken/turkey gizzards.

They are tasty. I do not eat it much, but have. The best was a Foie gras filled ravioli in a port and beef marrow reduction.
/me waits for Carmina to wince.

We do a cold vinigrette salad here in PR called moyejitas en escabeche which is gizzards in a cold green banana salad with a vinigrette. I like the banana part, but I do not dig on gizzards. We make the same cold banana salad with a number of meats to include cod and octopus.

It is pretty yummy, and the vinaigrette is the real secret. Families guard their vinaigrette recipe with great jealousy. ;)

The salad also gets made without meat. Totally vegetarian friendly.

    You are an adventurous eater.

I eat, like... fruit. And vegetables. And hydrogenized stuff which is no good for me. Like Carmina, I dont eat meat, but even when I did, I never ate liver (of any variety), gizzards, cod, or octopus.

I can, however tell you exactly how the liver functions, and why, and list all of the microanatomical structures and functions. So my answer is actually similar to Cogito's. If the liver were functioning properly, the amount of alcohol the chicken consumed would be very little, or if the body (and therefore the liver) shut down due to alcohol poisoning, the content would still be negligible; the amount of alcohol that would kill a chicken is likely a few shots or beers for humans (educated guess; no real evidence on that claim ;) ).

The liver's function, I feel, is pure and clean compared to the kidney's and alimentary tract's functions. Blech!

I had bacon-wrapped chicken livers as hors d'oeuvres at a party once.

Because, you know. Everything is classier if you wrap it in bacon.

I use bacon as a condiment.

I use it as an accessory.

Can't find a purse that matches my outfit? I wrap all my belongings in bacon. Can't find a necklace I'm happy with? I wrap my neck in bacon. Shoes aren't as glam as they should be? Baconize 'em.

I just wish the hobos would stop following me around.

I had liver once, never again. I left it in my car for an hour and my car smelled for a month.

I think you're thinking of goose liver, which is also known as foie gras. Chicken livers are still eaten but they aren't foie gras (I think)
    Caviar is fish eggs.

I don't think the liver does filter the blood, that's the kidneys. The liver produces urea, bile and cholesterol and breaks down poisons like alcohol...I wouldn't personally want to eat it but that's more because of the fact they force feed the geese to make their livers fatty for eating, which I think is cruel.
