    Favourite Words?

Discussion in 'Word games' started by akexodia, Sep 27, 2011.

Okay, everyone has a list of words that they adore and love to use (be it cuz of meaning, pronounciation...). What are the top 5 words in that list of yours? (Just out of curiosity!) :p

Perhaps a word or two but not used often. If I had to come up with them
    it would be nefarious (to describe the neighborhood I came from);
    ineffable (to describe the indescribable experiences of metaphysics);
and insidious (as presently describes both political parties in USA).

Subsequent: Because you can only use 'aftermath', 'outcome', and 'result' so much. And I like the way it sounds when I say it.
Detached: Because there's more than one context to it, and I like all it's contexts- especially when regarding an emotional state.

Those are the only ones that have popped in my head at the moment. Will add more later when I think of them.

Lake - a large body of water. A place with potential in a story.
Frisson - passing sensation of excitement; thrill
Lip - coz I don't want anyone giving me some :)
Incorrigible - beyond correction. Coz that's what I am!
Mentalist - coz I'm enjoying the series.

Visceral: Gut-wrenching, in the moment, experiential. Gotta love it.
Ephemeral: Rolls off the tongue nicely, and is a good word to know.
Anomie: A sociological term, basically referring to a lack of social norms and values. I like it because I'm sociologically inclined and it's a profound concept, and it sounds intriguing.
Quark: ...I just like the way it sounds, lol. Bosons are kewl too.

Eviscerate is also a word I like to use, though there's little variety to its context.
    -and-
Transmogrify, because no matter how many times I hear it, spell it out, and try to say it, I always say and spell it wrong. My brain always wants to put an extra 'R' between the 'M' and the 'O'.

I like discourse, loathe, cacophony, obliterate, and disconcerting... those are pretty good.
But, there are soooo many more... Gotta love the English language. There's at least ten different ways to say the same thing using ten different words that mean the same thing! (Ugh... That made my head hurt...)

Snore. It's a great word! Also rummage and rubbish. "Rummage through the rubbish" would be a cool sentence. And "Solo". "Theater". "Throb". "Spark." "Young."

I don't usually like long Latin words. I find it hard to fit them into sentences in ways that work rhythmically and tonally.

I have an ongoing list of favorite words XD
Arrogant, miasma, murmur, myriad, ersatz, vanish, alchemy, dandelion, why, autumn.
Those are just some of my favs! I think my favorite of all of those is "murmur". Whenever that word is in a story used by my favorite boy character it's like an automatic swooooon! :)

spelunking - also known as "deep cave diving." I just have a lot of fun saying it. XD
enrapture - To me, the word just sounds like something you would purr out and has a lot of emotion behind it.

Pandemonium - I just like the sound of it. It's such a beautiful word, but has a not so beautiful meaning.
Annihilate - I also like it for the way it sounds and the spelling intrigues me.
Chaos - I also like it for the sound
Befuddle - I just think this word sounds funny, I like to use it so I won't use the word "confuse" too much.
Alas and other words like "'Tis" and "'Twas" - I just like to add that old English vibe.

    oxymoron
    fluffy
    gusset

In most cases it's purely because of the way they sound. Certainly for the words with double consenants. They just make the word funnier; wobble, bubble, popper, gaggle etc. Gusset is my favourite though. It's such an old fashioned term that all the elements of lewdness have been stripped from it but it's still got that 60's 'carry-on' feel to it.

solliloquy: because it has ''a silly'' ring to it as in ''sollilo'' and the word quy looks like guy.
