[complete] a.m.p's 'wyrd of the words - wordsmith

Discussion in 'Progress Journals' started by A.M.P., Sep 30, 2014.

    Wyrd of the Words
    Wordsmith

    Genre | Modern Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy
Length | Novel Projected at 80, 000 words...
Series | Wyrd of the Words Book I...........

    Word Counter

    .......................
    50, 400 Words
    .......................

"After the fall of the three self-titled gods at the hands of the Wishmaster, the white tree Yggdrasil grew until the it touched the very stars themselves and its roots covered the earth and sky of the world. This cataclysm destroyed modern society and reduced mankind to a stage of survival of the fittest.

Seven hundred years later, the witches came and restored some semblance of civilization as they scavenged the ruins of the Old World for technology, information, and a way to destroy Yggdrasil.

However, this story isn't about what happened back then or about a way to restore the world. No, this is the tale of a select few who'll shape the world in their attempts to find a way to love and live with themselves."

This book will be split into multiple points of view creating a large and unique cast where each are an protagonist and an antagonist to themselves or the others.

Griffin - The innocent and naive youth who dreams of adventure
Wolf - The anti-social monster with a heart of gold...............
Leo - He who judges all in search of good.........................
Hawk - A killer terrified of his own mind..................................
River - A token girl fighting for her chance to live..................
Lucky - With no real name, luck seems to keep her alive..........

Each chapter will begin with a quote from the historical figures in the book adding the lore and related to the following chapter.

"Yggdrasil is a reminder for all mankind – man must never assume godhood lest we all burn within his ascension to the heavens."
    - Witch Queen Izala, 57th of the 5th Era "

Every new quote for each chapter will be posted in a new entry to bump the thread and add new information about the world for you all to read. Of course, feel free to discuss my project here as well! Talking about it always boils the blood.

The purpose of the journal is to have something to be held accountable to. It worked for my wonderful piece One Night, the Carnival and I am hoping this here will keep me more focused and interested in actively writing.

I ask for any support and kind words you can give, even a like goes a long way for me.

    I did amazing today!
So many new chapters and quotes and I still have fire for more!
I'm going to need beta readers soon, as I hate to pile it on a single person.
I hope the things I want in the book are apparent in the book.
So much has changed since the first initial concepts that I hardly recognize it.
Perhaps these old ideas don't need to be in the book
or perhaps that me saying I doubt I can do it...

Whatever the case, WotW is going to be an enjoyable and entertaining story
that I believe fantasy lovers of all ages can appreciate and get lost in even if it's not as perfect as it is in my own mind.

    May 7th 2015

I bet I can finish the rough draft and most edits before my birthday this month.
A quarter of my life nearly over.
I need to make the rest count.

WotW is going to be a reality.

Best of luck as you press on. The quotes can be challenging, but could very well be worth it for the reader.

I've often heard that they aren't popular or that publishers hate 'em.
I used to really like them back when I was a kid so I wanna kinda keep it alive, y'know?
It is hard to think of something worth saying without it being overly long, boring, or just uninteresting.

An agent won't decided against representing a novel and a publisher won't reject a novel because you have quotes at the beginning. Once you're novel's accepted, it's something to discuss with the editor. If they're good and add to the story, they'll most certainly be kept.

If you can key the quotes for something that occurs in the chapter they start off, that would be an added dimension. Maybe that was your plan. I used what I called 'chapter starts' for my novels. Two different styles. Longer than quotes.

    That's exactly what I'm doing.
Each quote is related to the chapter it's presented in.
Maybe not directly or obviously but once you read it you could make the connection.

“A good man is a useful man, a useful man is a working man, a working man is a true man.
For I to be anything less is poison for I, family, and humanity itself."

    - Mantra of the Mistress of Men, 874h of the 6th Era
This one is a bit odd.
I feel like it could be stronger.
It's about the social state where everyone has an assigned job to do and to not be working is literally against the rules and shameful.
A slight communistic ideal, in a sense, but it's a world where vagrants are simply impractical for the survival of humanity.

I feel that, in this context, "humanity itself" is pompous. Without it, it is simple enough for a working mand.

Just for some context: humanity itself just survived an apocalypse and it's literally about a half a million people living in a city.
The world is a toxic and dangerous place and human resource is thinly spread as they try to survive and keep the species alive literally.
It's the idea that you have to work and do things for others because if you don't, it hurts everyone.

I'll toy around with it, maybe I could do without the 2nd part at all. I'll have to see how it feels as I write.

Wow. Very interesting idea for a story and I just read a book with quotes at the beginning of each chapter -the book was called Perfect Ruin. You could look at that for reference if you'd like. Otherwise this is definitely a book I'd grab off the shelf to look at by the sound of it.

That odd feeling when you forgot about a minor antagonist that only reveals himself when your story is like "Hey, by the way, this is the part where that guy comes in and does shit." and you're like "Ooh, yeah! I knew the character arc was missing something."

They cry for their freedom, for their rights, for their individuality but when they have it, they then cry for guidance.”
Not sure who said that or if if this is the best quote I can come up with.
Think I want to research similar real quotes and see if I can fabricate something better.

It's due to the separatist clan that opposes Valentine's rule over mankind.
They thrive on their own strengths and usually all by themselves, rarely coming together as a unit.
Hawk's losing faith in the clan's purpose and is wondering when had the clan become so meek and dependent on the group (Which he can't recall seeing when he was a child) causing him to eventually set out to find answers about himself when stuff hits the fan.

    Another 3000 words today, woo.
    Well, for this chapter anyways.
It did not go exactly as planned. Felt a bit rushed and I'm a bit iffy on the PoV I went with it.
However, it had to be done, River was never meant to be in the picture but the only way for everything to work is that she would be the one....
    Oh boy :3

    Another chapter down.
Very short compared to the others but I believe it'll "meat" up once I start edits.

    For now, a little info/tip:

For this novel, I have a folder with every character's PoV as it's own file.
So, basically, six word files that have only chapters pertaining that character.
It makes it easier to keep track and go back to reread old things for refreshers as well as allows me to, later on, put them all together in a logical and orderly fashion (If not, we'd get like 3 Griffin chapters all at once, 2 Wolf chapters, 1 River, 1 Leo, 2 Hawk and nothing would be in sync...)

Bouncing around six character POV's is definitely a feat. I've read epic fantasy books that don't go over four or five! Good luck keeping each character in the back of your reader's mind lol

Six main characters and twice as many supporting characters.
It's not too hard to write so many of them because it all revolves around the same story but keeping the time lines consistent and making sure there is enough growth in sometimes very constrained windows is a bit tougher.
