    Conflict

Discussion in 'Writing Prompts' started by becca, Apr 18, 2010.

In this game you name a set of characters, max 4. The next poster names a genre of a story that the characters could be in and a conflict that they would have in that genre plot. Then they list a new set of characters for the following poster.

    Example:

Post 1: A teen boy who can't read; an old woman in a wheelchair.

Post 2: Young Adult - Young man got into trouble and has been sentenced to community service, but since he lives in a small community, it's in the local nursing home. He is assigned to read to a woman in a wheelchair. He is faced with the dilema of telling them that he can't read or pretend and make up the stories he tells the woman.

    Then.... (new set of characters)

Characters to start: A ten year old girl; a foreign gardener that can't speak the local language; Father of the girl, who is away on business a lot; Mother of girl that works from home.

ADDITIONAL RULE: The poster who provided the characters for the most recent post may not respond to the latest set of characters, to ensure that the thread is not monopolized by any pair of members.

Science fiction. The gardener is from another planet, and has been placing plants in the garden that drain intelligence from the girl and stores it. The gardener is able to pick up the knowledge later. The mother notices that, as the gardener begins gaining mastery of the language, the girl is losing hers. The mother uses a video camera to capture images of the gardener sucking the girl's intelligence out through the plants. She calls the father, away on government business... and he rushes home, armed with secret government weaponry to fight the alien... will he get back too late, and if not, will the weapons even work?

    Next:

An intelligent and compassionate woman who is a dog breeder.
    The cigar-smoking landlord of a high-rise apartment.
A circus performer with a trained monkey.

I like the conditional rule posted by Cogito - it's a nice touch. Gotta keep the bar high.

Charlie, that was a cruel twist on what could have been an otherwise pleasant "feel-good" book for middle-aged housewives about the importance of family values and you had to go and make it exciting - how dare you >=P

Also science fiction - because cheating is fun.
The woman's dogs have recently developed the ability to speak because of warps in the fabric of reality caused by the greedy sapping of Dark Matter by the landlord who uses his suspiciously clean high-rise apartment as a base for devious experiments on animals. The woman and her dogs teams up with a travelling circus performer and his monkey assassin to defeat the landlord and his robot army, freeing the caged animals and returning reality to the norm... for now.

Let's be fair with this next one.

A high school girl from the rich end of town addicted to fast cars and misbehaving
The grizzled veteran of the police force about to retire
Two shady local gang members, one who is chronically selfish and sells drugs to kids, the other who is just trying to make ends meet for his family, both capable of charm to a degree

The girl is called Jamie. She’s 19 and dating the son (Alex) of the grizzled veteran of the police force (Henry). What she doesn’t realise, is that Alex is one of the local gang members. Alex sells drugs to the kids after school; no one knows who it is and the kids don’t tell who he is because then their drug supply will stop. The poor old drug-dealer trying to make ends meet for his family is in fact an undercover cop, about to spring Alex and put him behind bars.

    .....

    6-year-old Jane.
    William Shakespeare.
A handsome, half-Italian, half-Spanish shop attendant who wears a large silver ring on his right forefinger.

    This could be a fantasy.

The shop attendant is a fallen member of an ancient magical order called "The Order of the Bronze Codpiece." Once he was a senior ranking mage within this order but developed an ill-favoured pre-occupation with necromancy which led to him being expelled. Now working as a shop attendant he is trying to get back into the order by proving that necromancy is good. His first attempt at raising the dead was to try and resurrect Jane Austen, only he got the wrong one and was left with jane Austin from Bolton who died at the age of six after falling from an apple tree. He had a little more success with William Shakespeare but unfortunately the Bard has been reanimated with no memory. The attendant is trying to re-educate Shakespeare so that he can take him to "The Order of the Bronze Codpiece" and prove that Necromancy is the way forward.

Ok here are the next ones:

An elderly man who always carries around a goldfish in a plastic bag
    A postman
A middle aged woman who sings in nightclubs.

    Romance.

The postman narrates the touching story of the elderly widower who always carries the fish that reminds him of his long, lost wife, who loved fish, and of the middle aged woman who sings in a nightclub... how the postman delivered a package to the elderly man that lead him to the nightclub, and to the woman, who knew his late wife fifty years ago... a story of how, even in old age, two lonely people may find love and romance again.

Horror: The man with the deformed eye is married to the vet, and they both want to savagely kill the pianist and the kids, then let the dogs eat the remains.

Oh that's just so... "lol" for lack of a better way of putting it.

    ANYWAY

Sci-fi/fantasy: Four aspiring writers post their problems and experiences on a writing forum, gradually discovering that despite having known geographical locations in their profiles that they are actually from alternate worlds.

Eternity resides in a modern Dreamtime Australia, where the native spirits of Rainbow Serpent mythology actively take part in the everyday lives of the people within it.

Gingerbiscuit hails from an England that never lost control of its vassal states and still retains India, Africa and most of America as part of its great empire but never claimed Hong Kong and is locked in a cold war with the political powers operating in Asia.

CharlieVer is the lone inhabitant of an Esher-esque world, where things impossible by our laws of physics occur every three and a half oranges past the hour. He lives in blissful solitude, but finds himself hunted by whispering shadows and must flee or perish every night as the moons intersect.

Solarstarrkatt lives in the world today as we know it, but as the story progresses the influences from the four worlds begin to bleed into each other, warping reality and causing confusion.

The four adventurers trace the source of their connection to a common location where the spiritual energies of their worlds converge and the mysterious spire that has been erected that allows travel between the universes possible. After simultaneously touching the spire (because that's what people always do duuuh) they are thrown into each others worlds and must survive the strange environment while trying to find a way home, still able to communicate on the forums.

As the anomalies grow in frequency and severity, with masses of confused tourists wandering the twisted halls of time and space, furniture sticking to the ceiling in Great Britain, Imperial Soldiers doing battle with the Australian spirits and the Rainbow Serpent tearing through Indiana, the four converge on the WorldMaster - a mage from yet another world where magic is commonplace and the greatest civilisations pursue greater and greater feats of impossibility.

They pursue him back to his own world and are granted powers based on the worlds from which they came (Spirit of the Earth for Eternity, The Dragon of Wales for Gingerbiscuit, Scisyhp Enodnu (Physics Undone) for CharlieVer and Suffering Made Manifest for Solarstarrkat). With these powers and more that they pick up as they go along, they confront the WorldMaster and his underlings, defeating him, breaking his AllSpire and shattering the bond between worlds, hurling them back to the realities from which they came.

The get a bill from their ISPs later totalling seventeen-billion dollars (or one flanian pobble bead for CharlieVer)

    A (weird!) romance.

The mannequin is boy in a childrens' clothes shop, he still looks 15 though he has in fact been modeling clothes for 29 years. He has seen Marie, the elementary school girl, passing by the store every day for the last three years on her way to school and knows he's in love.

The talking cat is in fact his best friend; a toy that dies every now and then because the shop owner forgets to change her batteries. She sits in the window to entertain shoppers. William (the mannequin) loves Marie but doesn't know how he can ever have her, since he's actually not alive. He can see, and has feelings, but cannot actually move or do anything himself.

William is brought to life when Marie comes into the shop one day. She's lost her library book, and thinks that her friend, the shop-owner's daughter, Claire, might have it. Claire tells her it's on the shelf and as Marie reaches up, she trips over the talking toy cat and falls against William. Her lips touch his and suddenly he is alive - a rather plastic-looking mannequin. He is the last remaining result of a crazy scientist's experiment a few decades ago. He is not human, still mannequin, but alive. He manages to make Marie fall in love with him and they live happily ever after.

    Go figure. :)

Okay so here's the next one:

    Cogito's avatar
    A dishcloth
    A 64-year-old person
    A single rose

Romantic comedy with a surprise ending.

The whole story, you think Cognito's avatar is in love with the 64-year-old-person clutching the dishcloth. He brings the rose, avows his love, and then, it turns out he's in love with the dishcloth.

Cult classic musical head-screw script - think Rocky Horror or Shock Treatment

A federal bank committee formed to monitor the monitoring of committee monitors is reviewing a review of a review with a recent breach of business protocol where Amy and May - a pair of Siamese twins and secretaries in one of the branches - were in the middle of a heated dispute with the cleaning lady Mariko: The aforementioned transgendered retired sumo wrestler.

Mariko had been trying again and again to steal Amy's prized Giant Bonito from the lobby fish tank, assumedly to eat it. As explained through a series of musical dance numbers, Mariko actually has feelings for Amy and is trying to get her attention, while May constantly counsels her not to have Mariko fired because May has feelings for her, but no-one can tell anyone because relationships within the company are forbidden.

One day a robber holds the bank up at gunpoint, threatening to shoot Amy and May. Mariko charges him from behind but fails to disarm him. The robber tries to shoot Mariko, but is struck on the back of the head by the twins and is knocked unconscious, though the gun fires a bullet, breaking the fishtank and spilling the Benito onto the floor. Mariko picks up the Benito and runs out the door with it with Amy and May in hot pursuit.

Fearing the worst, the twins chase Mariko into an aquarium where they find the Benito unharmed and Mariko suffering a heart attack from the exertion. With her dying breath, Mariko admits her love for Amy, but May remains silent.

Every scene has at least two musical numbers in them, at least one of the songs in the entire play/film will be a long-lost, unpublished track written by Elvis shortly before his death.

The committee concludes that Amy and May will be fired and receive both Mariko's and their own retirement packages but may retain their jobs if they successfully apply to have the fish listed as a full time employee with benefits but without pay.
