    how do you write the common comparative phrasing "you say tomato, or i tom-AH-to?"

    yes, if you spell the one phonetically, you must also spell the other one that way, or it makes no sense...

    I read that as tomahto, tomahto.

    I'm going to have to agree that spelling both phonetically is the way to go, since you can't guarantee if your audience has a particular accent or not.
