    Day of Silence

    Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Ferret, Apr 19, 2007.

    So, I don't know about you, but today was IDOS day. Basically, if you relate to homosexuals, you don't talk..the whole day. Even though I'm for gaymarrage (Libertarian not Liberal), I didn't stop talking.
    What about you?

    Never heard of it.

    I don't care either way for the homosexual marriage thing. It doesn't really concern me.

    I wouldn't go a whole day not speaking ever. xD

    We already have gay marriage here anyway. Besides homosexuals should give up while they are ahead...

    I've gone without speaking before. But thats only because I sometimes haven't left my house, or phoned anyone.
    Instead of having a day of silence it should be a day of explanation. Inform people about the challenges homosexuals face, and all the good things about homosexuality.
    Having a day of silence sounds good on paper, and will get some attention, but actually speaking out is better.

    The concept itself has no real purpose.

    Yeah, a Day of Silence is kind of dumb and against the point. Speak out, not in.
    I'm all fer gay marriage (for obvious reasons) but that's pretty dumb.

    A day of silence. Sounds more like a memorial to me.

    Yesturday was my second year doing The Day of Silence. It starts as soon as you step into the school doors and ends at the end of school. My school's Gay Straight Alliance organized it this year and they gave out cards to anyone who wanted to participate. You gave the card to your teacher or friends when they asked you why you weren't talking.

    On the Card::::

    Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence caused by harrassment, prejudice, and descrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices.

    Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

    What you can do to help end the silence and create a safer environment: Refrain from using "gay" as a derogatory term.

    ::::

    I really believe in this cause and I know that it helps bring attention to the every day descrimination and prejudice.

    I doubt very many peopel could do this sort of thing anyway. I have to talk to people at work, so it wouldn't be practical at all - I'd get fired if I didn't talk!! What would you do if the phone rang? Ignore it??

    guess it's the equivalent of 'a day without mexicans'... in that context, i can see the intent is letting others see what a gap would exist in society if all of that persuasion should disappear...

    Ah, I didn't know so I was wondering why it was so "obvious." Gotcha.

    I think that if I was gay, I would like to get married and be angry at the thought of not being allowed to... to be controlled like that in a basis of my choice.... I'm not gay but I know someone who is and I would be interested in her response to this.
    I think she asked if I cared about her being gay and my response was "So?" She is a human being and so are everyone on this planet. I probably wouldn't like it so much if they 'cracked' onto me!
