    Writers advice needed!!!!

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Sasha Mayorov, Nov 14, 2011.

    Hey everyone!

I'm new to this forum and I have very little to do with writing. However I need some help which I'm sure you guys would be able to provide. I have recently joined a band and it does not have a name at the moment... And we are really struggling to come up with one that sounds nice and can make people think about it's meaning.

I think that to be a writer you need to have a quite rich vocabulary and be creative to keep your readers interested. These skills could definitelly help with creating a name that we are looking for!

    Appreciate your help!

    Uh...

Forgot some crucial details! We are a metal band (metalcore if anyone knows). We dont want to use any references to religion, blood, murder or anything of that sort (but if you really think it sounds cool send it anyway haha). So far the names we were looking at were:

    Dethroned
    Messengers of secrets
    Strength of few

    Thanks in advance!
    Sasha.

You absolutely have to name the band "Vacavulary". That would be the most kickass name.

From that, you could also be the "Vocal Cavalry"/"VoCavalry". Plenty of cool stuff you can do with that.

Whoops, haha I told you I need help =D but I'm not THAT bad, I was just typing from my phone and didn't go over it second time to check. We were thinking of cavalry but other members were not happy with it. Thank you for suggestion though.

    PS

I'll change my OP so people don't think I'm a moron haha

VoCavalry. DOOO IT. It sounds awesome. It's cute. And "VC" is a cool abbreviation.

Long names tend to get abbreviated, so I'd go for something shorter than your 2nd and 3rd examples. Um... Secret Weapon?
Um... VoCavalry means nothing to me, and it doesn't roll off the tongue very impressively imho. Not like that group Steeler's Wheels, for example. Band of Damned? No, sounds like a Flemish karate expert.
It would be nice if the name was a bit more personal, maybe. Some bands, like Led Zeppelin, got their name after an incident early in the group's history, or a characteristic of the lead singer, such as Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Dr Hook...
It doesn't have to be English either--e.g. there's been Status Quo or the (Turkish) group Manga, or even totally nonsense names like Echo and the Bunnymen.
And yes, I know I'm revealing my era, so don't anyone try to point this out to me, please...

There's a trend to allusion in the names of -core bands: Bring Me The Horizon (inspired by a line in Pirates of the Carribean), The Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying (the title of a Faulkner novel)... you get the picture. I'm not enamoured with those names - allusion should be more subtle (actually, the first one is quite cool) - but it's a way to go about it.

^^ good thinking. I sometimes remember names of books and poems years after I've read them, like
The man who cried I am
    Howl
    The Raven
    The fire sermon

    THE FIRE SERMON!

Such a good name. Relates to Buddhism as well as T.S. Eliot - double points for tiered intellectualism! Great to discuss in interviews. It's catchy too, and evocative.
Sasha Mayorov, I think we've named your band for you. :p

    Hi,

There's already a group called Mental as Anything, maybe you could try Metal as Anything. Also sticking with the metal themes; Gearhead (It might be a game I'm not sure), Steel Mill, Heavy. Or you could go with something completely esoteric; Silent Thunder, or literary such as Quoth The Raven.

    Cheers.
