    Spelling out the pain . . .

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Jeredin, May 9, 2009.

What are some different ways of spelling out the sounds of pain, in dialog?

I have a character who's just woke up with a neck-ache, and I'm having a hard time finding a good way to spell out his pain in dialog.

I'm aware that I could just describe the groan, but the scene really asks for it to be in the dialog.

    Thanks for your suggestions. :D

'Ouch', 'Ow', 'expletive/taboo word my insert achey body part here hurts' = those are the ways I'd choose to do it, but it obviously depends on whether or not you are comfortable with using taboo language in your piece.

For groaning I'd use "Aughh" or "Ughh" or "Ahh."

    Hurm . . .

What do you think about "Uhnn"?

It usually sounds corny. Why do you think the scene calls for him to moan in dialog? Why can you narrate?

Ahhrr, is another, but again I think it is corny. He groaned in pain, is better IMO. Or something like that.
