    Fights

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Juju Bagdasarian, May 23, 2013.

I dont know if that is a little anorthodox to ask but i cant find a way for my villain to punch my main character although the villain has him tottaly under his mercy i am really stuck at this one for three days now, so if you can right some part of fighting scene where a last punch to kill is included or even tell me some books where i can find books that have good one on one fights i would be grateful. thanks :D

So hang on, what exactly do you mean by "at his mercy"? For example, is your MC pinned under some debris, held a gunpoint, in an arm lock?

Haven't you read any books with a few fisticuff scenes...? I mean this is pretty basic stuff seeing how people have been writing beat-the-other-guy-up scenes for a few thousand years now. Any cowboy, detective, espionage, thriller, suspense, SF, or hell even romance novel will have them.

Okay whatever. Here is the Google page I got for, "how to write a fight scene".

Uhh... unless you don't want him to die here is an idea:

the villain punches him, the MC falls on something that splits his skull or cuts his head off (example: shield with the edges sharpened like sword blades)

I do a lot of fight scenes but those are mainly wolf/sword fights and the odd semi-magic explosive stuff. (not sure if you can call control over time, gravity, and pressure magic though)

I'm not sure if I'm a little slow or whatever, but I don't understand the question: if the villain has the MC at his mercy, what's the problem? Why wouldn't he punch him?

There's no special technique to a killing punch; though there's some specialist moves in various martial arts, and hundreds of urban legends, mostly it comes down to luck. As for the punch itself, that would be identical to any other punch, except in effect.

Killing with a punch happens more often than you might think. Concussive brain injury, crushed airway, cervical spinal cord injury, pericardial effusion, punctured lung, tension pneumothorax, ruptured organs, all these and more can be caused by blunt force injuries like a punch or series of punches.

the villain just broke my MC's sword with his hand but there is no headlock or gun held against him just the diffrence in strength which makes my MC pretty scared

I don't know if this idea is included in that link Nee gave you, but you COULD just watch some realistic fight scene in a movie or TV show and just describe what you're seeing there. How does the person throwing the punch move? What kind of expression is on his face when he does it? How does the punchee react? Just transcribe what you're seeing onto the page.

Dont know if it is of any use to you but I got alot of fighting ideas from when I worked as a prison officer. I remember one day during dinner where all one hundered and twenty prisoners would be out on the unit eating, a prisoner nearly died when annother who took a dislike to his crime had upper cut him and broke his neck. When we got to him he was grunting in pain and shaking so hard he was, to me, almost vibrating. Med staff arrived quickly and took care of him but it could have killed him. If you are looking to kill the MC I guess that is one way of doing it with a punch. But any punch could cause a death. If you don't want the punch to be fatal then there are plenty of books about fighting you can use and apply to your own writing. I love Boxing and read about it as voraciously as any other book but I discovered how the authors can describe fights beautifully in a way that can be transferred to any 'fight scene' outside of a ring. Apologies for rambling, hope I could help a little.

Thanks that is a great fighting scene for a book obviously i hope the other guy is okay i am searching i found some stuff but after re-reading my last pages many times i also found out that the problem came from the way i begun writing the scene that got me blocked. i am rewriting it at the moment, it is going smoother and the words are flowing naturally from my mind on the paper. Its not the first time i have a one on one fight but this one is extremly important and i want to make it perfect.

Punches to the neck or the sides of the head are the most dangerous ones since even an inarticulate or underpowered punch can connect with a lethal spot.If your villain is strong enough to break steel with his hands alone though, I highly doubt your MC would survive a punch from that villain connecting with any part of his upper body. A punch to the solar plexus with that much force would stop his heart(or burst it) and a punch to any major organ (liver, spleen, kidneys, stomach, lungs etc) would rupture it killing him just as well.

coming from the martial arts perspective (being trained in Shotokan Karate) there are several ways of punching someone that could kill them, you have to also consider how much said person can take attack wise before it kills them. for instance,

A blow to the temple(s): this depends on the force applied, i got a fairly hard back fist to the temple once, and blacked for a few seconds, but thats cause im trained to be able to take hits like that, however, your MC may not be

a palm strike to the chin, forcing the head back: if done effecively could snap the neck,

knife hand to the side of the neck: the effect here would be similar to that of the temple,

Pressure points are good places to try, as these are the weakest spots on the human body as well as armpits, groin, bottoms of feet and neck/face as well as a few pretty pointless places such as in between your fingers... basically anywhere where the skin is weaker like joints
