Not a fan of any pixar/disney computer animation movies. Read a good review by Armond White about Frozen recently which sums up a lot of the issues in these films; weak musicals, stale cliches, lack of humanity, etc. http://cityarts.info/2014/01/15/freeze-dried-disney/
Yeah, that guy is right. And that's why Frozen only has an 89% on rotten tomatoes on only won two oscars. He's not an outlier at all.
I'm a bit old school with my Disney movies. My all time favourites are probably The Sword in the Stone, 101 Dalmatians, Cinderella and Dumbo. I love old Disney movies as well, like Parent Trap. From the newer ones, I liked the original Kung Fu Panda and Shark Tale, but I haven't seen many to be honest. Never got into the Lion King because I had a mass murderer patient once and that was his all time favourite film. It soured it for me a little. Also, I like hyenas and they aren't portrayed very nicely
I like Dumbo, only because it was the last Disney film that Walt Kelly worked on before the strike 1941. Kelly split from Disney, even though they offered him his job back. You can see his style on the incredibly racist crows. Not that Kelly was a racist, just his crows.
Aw, I love that bit! And the wolf when he is all tired following Arthur, and when Merlin packs up his house, and the squirrels, and the wizard fight But Archimedes laughing cracks me up every single time I see it, so cute!
I also love Mad Madam Mim! She's so ghastly! As much as I like modern animation and children's films, they're just not the same as they used to be.
So cute! And obviously, Madam Mim is my favourite character I could not agree more. So much more content and meaning. It was all done before the. hollywood think tank started to molest the 'hero myth'.
Being a die hard fan of pixar movies, i just LOVED frozen. I really don't see what the problem is. It is the best among the ones that were out recently in the past few years. "plot points that are really song cues and songs that are applause seekers"? The songs are one of the important reason why disney movies are loved so much.
Well a little quick history lesson is important, because the people who are pinning for the Disney classics like Lion King and Little Mermaid where the same voices who were pinning for Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp when The Little Mermaid came out. The people who are complaining about the dearth of modern talent simply don't understand how stories work, why the make people feel things, and why the are popular. They are nothing more then curmudgeons, complaining that something new isn't exactly the same as everything that came before it.
Even though I liked Frozen very much, I think that advertisement did a lot of work- I mean if you advertise a cartoon being as good as The Lion King, which is a classic, there's no wonder why it becamse so popular. I liked Frozen, but Wreck-it Ralph was better IMO. Better plot twists if nothing else. Disney almost had no choice but to advertise Frozen as much as they did. This animation movie is the result of some serious effort. The studio was trying to make this cartoon happen for 70 years, but they couldn't do it. Mainly because all the Disnay cartoons are good vs. evil themed and in the original The Snow Queen by Andersen there's no final good vs. evil battle. Many of the best creators tried to create a good plot for Frozen (including The Lion King, The little Mermaid... creators), but they all failed until, after much ideas were proposed, someone suggested "Hey, what if Elsa and Anna were sisters?" And that is what they did at the end. So after 70 years of creating a story they actually had no choice, but to advertise it the way they did. And that and the songs were what kept the viewers interested IMO.
Anyone saw The Secret of Kells? It's about the Book of Kells. It's not Disney cartoon, but it doesn't matter. I wish I'd just named the thread "Favorite cartoons"... I watched it today and it was fantastic. I recommend this cartoon to all lovers of old Disney movies, because this one is also hand drawn. Then I recommend it to everyone else because it's simply good , the imagery is stunning. I love the Aisling, her voice is so cute.
Point of order: You do not understand what hand drawn means in relation to an animated feature. But yes, Kells is awesome, I got the soundtrack.
Addendum: If you mean that Kells was drawn by hand, on paper with a pencil, transferred to celiniod painted and transferred to film; then no, it's not hand drawn. If you mean it's drawn by hand on paper with pencil then scanned into a computer, painted and compiled there, then transferred into film, it's still not hand drawn. If you mean drawn by hand with a stylus on a cintiq directly into Flash, then colored and compiled in a computer then transferred into film? Then yes, Kells was hand drawn.
What the hell do I know, a friend who studies graphic design just told me it's hand drawn with no further explanation. I honestly don't know any of these techniques, not my area of expertise, the only thing I can do is differ animation from a hand drawn... That's quite a big difference I think.
Well in the last 5 years animation has very quickly become stylus/cintiq as the industry standard. The options that working in the computer offer are too numerous and the advantages too great.
-Emperor's New Groove -Mulan and Mulan 2 -The Sword in the Stone -Dumbo -Hercules -Tarzan -Toy Stories I have to thank Disney for really using time and money on excellent foreign dubbing. I think Finnish voices are better than English.
I agree with you here. Many of films are actually better voice-acted in my language too. Surfs up for example (not Disney though) is absolutely hilarious, but in English it is boring and monotonous...
