    What is the purpose of these lines?

    Hey, I'm new to writing and have been advised to read Stephen King 'On Writing'

    "I was stunned by Mary Karr’s memoir, The Liars’ Club. Not
    just by its ferocity, its beauty, and by her delightful grasp of
    the vernacular, but by its totality—she is a woman who
    remembers everything about her early years.
    I’m not that way. I lived an odd, herky-jerky childhood,
    raised by a single parent who moved around a lot in my earliest
    years and who—I am not completely sure of this—may"

    What is the pupose of the dashes? When do you use them?

    There is a thread on dash usage just a few threads down that can help answer your question. It's called:

    "The use of dashes.. really confusing for me"

    Two of the ways used in your above paragraph have been covered in that thread.
