    What am i talking about?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Aled James Taylor, Jul 27, 2015.

I was going to explain what this thread is about, but in the spirit of the thread, I'll let to guess.

"No matter how many times I hear it, the alarm-clocks always take me by surprise."

You have a sleeping disorder. What exactly, I have no idea. I'm not a sleep disorder expert.

This is my logic behind why I think so:

The fact that no matter how many times you set your alarm clock, it takes you by surprise.
The fact that it takes you by surprise tells me that you awake abruptly and disruptive. It's jolting to you.

Is your character on some sleeping meds? Something that puts them in a deep sleep that a shocking noise, jolts them?

    1) The thread is about you asking us to make stories up based on your quote?
    2) The thread is about the psychological affects of alarm clocks?
    3) The thread is about us trying to decipher your metaphor?

Why does an alarm clock ring if not to jog someone from their autonomic state.

I am surprised that there is more than one alarm clock.

This is an unusual set up in a bedroom.

Alarm clocks could be a band.

My guess to the thread's purpose is that it's a "Figure out the writer's intent from limited prose" game.

I note that you hear "it", rather than "them", so perhaps the first half of the sentence refers to something other than the alarm-clocks (although I suppose it could still refer to the single cacophony generated by several alarm-clocks or some such).

Maybe you hear something in a repeated dream, and each time you do you're then surprised to be jerked back to reality by the alarm-clocks?

This thread was made at 3:11pm/EST which in UK's time would be 10:00pm or around that time. Point being Aled probably had just gotten home or was home and wanted to do something before he went to sleep. Therefore he came on here looking to see if he'd gotten any alerts and in that moment he had a fantastic idea for a thread. He spammed on the "Create Thread" button and watched as the page loaded, but alas he forgot what he wanted to say. So in that moment of confusion he decided to still create a thread anyways, so he could get some attention and wake up to find some fresh new alerts he could respond to. So this thread is about nothing!

The thread is about presenting a limited description of something and inviting people to guess what it is, (hence the limited description of what the thread is about).

I'm surprised no one's figured out the quote about the alarm-clocks yet. What single thing can you listen to, that has the sound of alarm-clocks?

Mobile phone with that as a ringtone? I suppose you usually wouldn't expect to receive a call, hence the surprise?

Well, if it's not a band, perhaps it's a song: Pink Floyd's Time?

Correct! Well done. I'm surprised no one realized sooner, it's only form one of the all-time greatest albums of all-time.

I reckon they got it from Gurdjieff or Alisteir Crowley. Pop stars are often very disappointing - Ginger Baker, the exception, naturally.

    [VERY PRETENTIOUS MAT]

[Maybe pretentious, maybe another word, similar. Pretentious works for most situations.]

That's a name I haven't heard in a while. I'm only familiar with what he did with Cream and Blind Faith.

A young US film-maker went to visit him in S Africa - and made an entertaining documentary. G Baker broke the lad's nose.

That sounds interesting. I'll have to see if I can find that somewhere.
