Does my story need a "quirk"?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Velocity, Dec 16, 2011.

I'm writing a comic book about a martial arts school and one person suggested to me that my story may need a "quirk".

He gave the example of the Tank Girl comic book. How she's kinda butch but kinda cute at the same time with heaps of huge guns. And there's also the Naruto manga/cartoon. Which is full of a school of ninjas as opposed to just normal people.

I suggested that my character could struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder while fighting and he loved it.

So, do I NEED a quirk to make it instantly appealing and unique to new readers?

    Cheers.

What you NEED is a good story with good characters. That's what you need.

I agree with CruciFICTION but think the OCD thing could be extremely entertaining. I can imagine a MC fighting (and he always has to have the fight occur in a certain order) and the other dude messes up that order so MC just knockes the dude flat instead of continuing the fight.

The OCD-ness of Monk was one of the reasons I absolutely love that tv show. I need to buy it on DVD, I think.

So like Monk the TV show, but instead it stars Bruce Lee. Sounds cool.

the Soul Eater anime had a combat character with OCD - one of the protagonists, Death the Kid.
