    whoever or whomever?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by victo, Jun 8, 2015.

Give the job to the most qualified candidate, whomever that may be.

It may be him, so I say whomever is correct.

Or is it: It may be he; hence we'd use whoever.

    Confused.

I'm thinking, "It may be he who is most qualified"--thus, "whoever" should be correct here, no? We wouldn't say, "Him is most qualified."

This wouldn't pass the "m" test--that is, whomever = him; whoever = he.
