Every journey begins with a single step. (not mine, but I don't remember who said it)

When in doubt, do what most girls do and give the credit to Marilyn Monroe. :p

    Oh, and good luck, Duchess!

When in doubt, look it up. :)

Provided Wiki's crowd sourcing is correct:
But just the fact you were that close is amazing, @Lemex.

This may have been true at one time, but not any more. These days, a journey of a thousand miles begins with advancing the throttles on all engines to full, accelerating to takeoff speed, rotating the nose up, and bringing up the landing gear. There's also some talking with air traffic control involved. :D

My instant vertical lift-off hyper space star ship disagrees with you. Unfortunately it is powered by the juice of the califlorida orange which won't hybridize until 330 years after the yellowstone super volcano implodes and melts the midwest and joins the two coasts of America.

Just for your information, the two coasts of America are already joined. It happened May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point, Utah, when the first transcontinental railroad was completed. This turned out to be kind of a big deal. :p

But they won't be joined by conveyor belt sidewalks until 1996 after the Velours detonate the resengency device in 3036 and spark the formation of the contingency police force

As you can see, I specifically said "these days." You are talking about 330 years after the super volcano implodes. Entirely different time periods. So if your hyper space star ship disagrees with me, it's wrong. :D

The journey begins with the first step toward the aircraft.

Not if you're flung into the aircraft by a trebuchet or other medieval siege weapon.

    Forget it, @EdFromNY - you can't win! :D

Yes, but I was not journeying a thousand miles then. I just wanted to look at the trebuchet, and they grabbed me and flung me into the aircraft against my will! o_O

Actually, I suppose it depends on how you define "journey." If intent is part of the definition, then I'm right. If chance and circumstance are all that's necessary, then you're right. ;)

@minstrel - I would argue that journeys do not always take us where we intend to go (see Nevil Shute's Trustee From the Toolroom for an example). :D

Following the logic in this thread, the first step toward anything would be your actual first step as a toddler. After all, isn't life the ultimate journey?

No, the first part of the journey begins with the big push.
